My brother has a friend up in Maine and wants my brother to go visit next week and bring a snowmobile. He says he can get a 3 day temporary registration for the sled but will he need insurance too? Is there anything else he would need to ride?

No insurance needed. Register and go. Happy trails.

He doesn't need insurance but I would highly recommend it, especially if he is going someplace populated. School vacation week coming up there will be a record number of idiots on the wrong side of the trail.
Where is his friend located?

Roxbury area.

Shouldn't be too busy there so he'd probably be ok without insurance if he didn't want to get it for just a few days, but heading north up to Rangeley will be a shitshow. Some rain in the forecast but Roxbury should still be ok after that, may even change to snow in that area. Should be a good time that's a great area to ride !
