I haven't done any private party firearm transactions recently. There is no requirement for a 4473 at an FFL for a private sale is there?  Just verify Maine residency and age?

Yes, the buyer must be a Maine resident and at least 18 years old, probably best verified via a Maine Drivers License.

A "nice to have" would be a check of a buyers license to carry (from any state) to have additional comfort level regarding who is buying.

A "Bill of Sale" for you and the buyer (maintained in your private records) would also be a good idea to protect yourselves.

Personally, I have always sold to / though FFL dealers, but have no issues with responsible private sales.

We fought hard in Maine to keep this right during the 2016 UBC Referendum that was pushed by Bloomberg.
