It's been a few years since I've gotten to hunt antelope. The tags in my region are much harder to get then they were years ago.
Antelope hunting is a great family activity. Usually not too cold, and easy to drive until you locate a herd then stalk. I always enjoyed planning and executing the stalk. Using every inch of elevation differences, with little vegetation to use as cover, to try to get as close as possible. Loved it.
My boys loved all of their antelope hunts, and even my wife enjoyed coming along.
Things I rmember....
Opening day is pretty important. Antelope get real skittish after they are hunted. Hunting later in the season, was always more difficult, as they seemed to more easily spot our stalk, and quicker to kick it in gear and run to the next county.
Hunting antelope after it snowed .......they blend in damn well. Harder to spot from miles off.
A water source near the hunt area can make finding herds a bit easier, but often, it's just a small livestock pond, no bigger than a little kids swimming pool. You may not even know its there.
Your hunt area 16 over by Buffalo may be a bit different to hunt than in the Big Horn Basin. They get more rain on that side of the mountain. Greener. Seems more decent sized hills just the east of Buffalo.
I'm sure the guys over there can give you some good advice specific to that area.
As for a gun. We usually got so close, shots were easy. I've shot them at 25yds with a .338win mag, and even an off hand shot at 75yrds, on a sprinting buck with my Indian No.1MkIII 2A, with iron sites.
My boys used .243s, PSL, and AR10 to harvest bucks at around 200yrds. You can surely hunt them from long range, and later in the season, it happens more often.
It's nice to find a nice green field that they like to go into and hunt near that.
When I was younger I almost always hunted in running shoes. The stalks often can end up with sprints as you try to flank a moving herd. We were never in a hurry to kill the first buck we saw, as there were always plenty. Usually our hunts were over by 9am on the first day.
