Air Florida 90 Crash In 1982 - Washington, DC

40 years ago I was a kid playing in the snow when a neighbor
told me about a plane crashing into the Potomac River.

I remember that like it was yesterday.  It had been snowing like crazy that day.  If I recall correctly, The Greaseman (DC101) called the Air Florida counter the following day and asked for a one way ticket to the 14th St. Bridge.  I think that was the last day The Greaseman worked at DC101.

That was Howard Stern who called about a ticket to the 14th St Bridge.  He caught flak for it.. but wasn't fired.  Stern left DC101 about a year later and the Greaseman was hired.... only to be fired by DC101 TWICE, a couple years apart, for inappropriate comments.

For some reason I thought it was the Greaseman who did that.

There were some real heroes in the river that day.

I think the first or many fatal Metrorail crashes happened the same day.

If I remember correctly, a Metro train derailed that day too.

Duh, got beat by a mile.  Looked it up and yeah, fatal derailment on the same day.

Back then Metro was only six years old. It was shiny, new, and the trains ran on time.

I still remember the story of the guy repeatedly passing the life ring to the next person down the line.  He drowned before they could get him out.

Arland Dean Williams, the definition of a hero.

I'm very jaded, but re-reading his story has me
getting choked up 40 years later.
