3,000 Dead Cows in Kansas

Anyone have any info on this?

Thanks!

I'll try to answer you as there isn't much traffic in this forum. Although, I don't have any more information than you probably already have.  Maybe someone else who knows more will chime in on this topic.

There is not much news on this locally in the eastern part of the state. We do have approximately 5.4 million cows in this state. A few thousand dead cows, although tragic for the rancher, doesn't seem to be raising much alarm. I guess there will be more news on it if they died from something other than the heat.

Many thanks, johnbrown1856!

Our neighbor, up here in Ohio, still has her ancestral farm in SW Kansas--near Sublette--(neighbors run it for her) --and she hasn't got any answers about this either. We'll see what plays out.

I hear the KS AG DEPT said: "Most likely heat," but ranchers tell me that heatstroke to cattle usually has the animals dying off in ones, and twos--not all at once.

PS
your name on these boards: john brown--if it refers to "The" John Brown--he ran a tannery about a mile from where I am (he had difficulties with the tanning business) and he made his famous pledge to abolish slavery here at the 1st Congregational Church, where they have a plaque.

We lost more than that during a blizzard some years ago.  The feedlots in southwest KS see hundreds of thousands of cattle every year and always have some loss.  This was a perfect storm of bad weather conditions -high temperatures, high humidity, muddy due to recent rains, and no time to cool down as the night time temperatures were high.

Thanks for the pictures! When I created this account after lurking for many years, I had been studying John Brown and his actions in Kansas, hence the account handle. If you are ever out this way, there is plenty of local historical places to visit that are John Brown related including his brother in laws cabin where he used to stay.

Thanks for telling us cattle losses can be brutal, ksstargazer. Man--and here I thought losing some acres of corn to a hailstorm here in Ohio was bad--losing those many cattle--WHOA!

Also, thanks for that info, johnbrown 1856!

If I'm out your way, I'll make it a point to stop by the museum.
