If we keep having these foggy mornings I should be tagging one any day now in the work truck.

I'll be going out this year. If anyone near the Missoula/Lolo area needs a person to go with I'll be around, PM if you want. Most of my friends don't go anymore. So it's usually just me or a few remaining people I know. Just gotta get out there. Will post up if I get anything.

Good luck tomorrow to everyone that is going out for the Deer/Elk opener. Hope you get something, make some memories, and come home safe.

Today I explored some new country and it paid off. Wind was ripping at a steady 15 mph with gusts well over 40. Trees began to break in half and uproot. I was really starting to second guess my choice and headed to more open ground. After a few miles of open parks I knew I had to get back into heavy bettle killed timber before diving back off the hill to the truck. I had been on this ridge before and had seen lots of sign and beds. I got to the top of where three ridges come together. On my left I noticed what looked like a rock. I thought to myself, ‘That’s funny. Everything is covered in snow except for that rock’. Then it dawned on me that it wasn’t a rock but indeed an elk. Mind you it was only 60 feet away. I dropped to a knee, brought the scope up and could see part of an antler through a small window in the trees. Then another gust of wind and it picked its head up and I could plainly see it was a legal bull. Boom. One to the back of the head and done. Luckily I had enough cell coverage to get texts out and three very good friends came to my aid. He was 1.5 miles from my rig. I’m super stoked!!!

Nice Elk!
A couple friends of mine and I are headed out tomorrow morning. East bound to the Malta area. Nothing on the menu but deer. (Yes we have all already turned in our votes for tomorrow's election) Still not sure why we drive 1/2 way across the state to shoot deer. Just about have to shoo the things out of the driveway in the morning. (The eastern deer do taste better than our western deer, IMO. So there is that) We've thought about taking the dogs and getting in a couple days of pheasant hunting, but it adds another huge layer of complexity to the trip. |

Was muley hunting in the CMR the last 3 days. Didn't shoot anything, but I came across an elk that had been caped and the head taken and the rest left to rot. Stopped an fwp guy this morning on the way out and gave him pics and GPS cords.

Went fear a relatively short hunt yesterday. About 5 miles or so at 6500 ft. Some elk sign, couple muley does snuck up on me when I sat down and closed my eyes for a minute.
Disturbing hunt for me actually. Was dog tired by the time I got back to the truck. I doubt I could have quartered a cow a got it back to the truck without calling in the calvary. May have to stick to bird hunting and eastern mt muley. |

Lol @ the random pheasant. View Quote That guy snuck in the back door. Saw him about 100’ behind us crossing the ice onto the island. Walked over and flushed him up. Nostrils showed he was a released bird. Very strange for where we were at. |

First Montana hunt, done completely solo and unguided. I’m absolutely hooked! All I can think about is hopefully drawing a non resident deer-elk combo tag and getting out next year. |
