I think I could get off next week from Wednesday to Friday and be able to stay until Saturday night.
Ive got a kayak but nothing more. I could bring water, but by then it may not be a issue. I could offer up man power which I am sure is in need Anything I could do? Or is that too little too late? Don't want to show up and get in the way, but if someone could get me some info on contacts Id gladly call and see if I could help out. |

My mother in Kingwood flooded. Luckily (or unluckily) she just bought the house and had not moved in yet.
I am looking for the best route from Pearland to Kingwood. Anyone know of a better route than this? Beltway west to 59N 59 north to 610N 610N to 290N 290N to BeltwayN Beltway N to 249N 249N to 99E 99E to FM1314E FM1314 to 59S 59S to Northpark Alternatively, is the east beltway open northbound? Does anyone know if I can get from the beltway north through Humble and Atoscacita? I am assuming that the bridges over the river and lake are impassable. |

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints along with numerous others, currently have a hotline available to submit work orders for specific need requests related to the damages and for cleanup efforts. There is no charge for these services. They are mobilizing thousands to come and help muck out homes, cleaning etc. This has been done in many cities throughout the world. Last year 5000 were mobilized to Louisiana. It may take a week or two, but bishops in the area have already submitted an estimation of homes damaged and preparation is underway.
By calling the hotline number, a volunteer will take down the information you need and create a work order and then attempt to send a volunteer crew out to help. This includes removing carpet, cutting down tree limbs, etc. Obviously there's still difficulty getting crews into the neighborhoods but this will allow us to start the rebuilding process, and they will come as they are able. The volunteer groups will come from LDS Mormon Helping Hands, Catholic Charities, Etc. Hotline numbers:

My fiancé and I are going to be out and about tomorrow in Katy area offering help in any way possible. I believe she is going to volunteer at one of the High School shelters and I'm going to see if any folks need help gutting houses.

If you're heading to Houston or the surrounding areas, be sure you have enough fuel to get back home. News did a report in Dallas and some stations were already running out although it was only a couple. QT (Quick Trip) spokesman said they will stop selling gas at some stores to make sure they have gas at others. This is in N Texas, I can only guess as more go into Houston, then resupply of fuel may get harder to obtain.

The online tracker also lists a handful of Dallas-Fort Worth stations as out of fuel. In some cases, those stations briefly ran out of some gasoline but were quickly restocked. |

The "comprehensive insurance policy" the storage people pushed on all the renters, of course excludes water or flood damage... Everyone is screwed! I am very lucky even with the set backs compared to many of those around the area. If I can help anybody with my Truck (4x4 1 ton 8' bed), prybar, work gloves or whatever, please let me know. Orange (and surrounding area) got hate fucked by Harvey. We got 45 inches of rain. I went into town today for formula and diapers. Kroger was opened, and I waited almost two hours to get in. Cash only, buy all you want. Just south of Kroger, the road was flooded out, supposedly 5ft deep. Rumor in the line was that Market Basket was only open to friends and family. Everything is draining, but it will take time. We've been without power since yesterday morning, and probably will be out until early next week, my guess, based off what I saw today on my trip. Lots of power lines down on FM 1130, and no repairmen on sight. We took only a little damage from driving wind and rain. The Honda genny is worth it's weight in gold right now. Window A/C is running so we can sleep. No water advisories in effect right now, but our water pressure is very low. We're sitting pretty on supplies and don't need anything personally, but I fear Beaumont and Orange will be forgotten about while the focus is on Houston. |

Thank you all who are helping out and to all of you who have offered up supplies, equipment, and your time! It's greatly appreciated. I live in the Beaumont/Port Arthur area. Beaumont (currently w/o city water) Port Arthur, Groves, Nederland, Labelle, Fannett, Winnie, Hamshire, & Orange was hit very hard. The rural areas outside of Beaumont especially Labelle & Fannett (where all my family is). There is a flood retention levee that surrounds Port Arthur, Nederland, Port Neches, & Groves. When floods come the city of Port Arthur closes the flood gates and starts pumping water out of the levee area and into the rural areas (Fannett & Labelle). We've spent the last few days getting hundreds of people out by boats and ATVs to dry land. There have been hundreds of volunteers with boats helping. It's nothing short of amazing how the communities have come together to help each other out. The pumps in Port Arthur and Groves finally gave out and couldn't keep up with the rain fall. The pumping stations flooded, at one point we got over 26" or rain in 24 hours. The failing pumps is one of the reasons port Arthur and groves go flooded so badly.
Luckily all of my families homes are OK or with just minor damage. But so many more were not so lucky. What's even worse is most of the homes that were flooded DIDN'T have flood insurance. I honestly don't know what they will do, FEMA may help some but it will not be nearly enough! The churches are doubling as shelters and staging points down here. My parents church had 4 families the first night of the storm, by the third day when flood waters came there were over 250 evacuees in that one church alone. The pastor sent out a request for cots and mattresses and in less than 2 hours there were supplies showing up!! But this is just one instance at one shelter, there are many many more stories like this where our communities have stepped up big time to help out. It makes me proud to live where I do!! |
