My place is on Cameron Rd. just South of Bohls lane. Zhukov, Sounds like you are still on that lease I was on with you a couple years back. I remember the guy that originally sold me on that multi field lease off Cameron road and the birds nest airport area (Scott something or other) and the only decent field was the one with the fenced off sunflower field in front and a couple tank on the back half that was just overrun with people. The sunflower field owner didnt even seem to control who went on the land it was just pretty much a free for all on opening day. I ended up on another lease up in hutto the past two years. Not much flying yesterday morning, three shots and two birds came home. They actually started flying right about 9:30 when I had to pack up and head into work. Maybe better this weekend if I can get a chance to get out there. James |

I like it because it is close, but this isn't going to work any more and I'm going to look around next season. |

He marched back to his truck and exchanged is 10 gauge Ack Ack battery for a little Remington .22 auto loader he kept behind the seat. He may have been picking his shots pretty carefully, but he downed three birds with five shots. My grandfather did something similar. When he turned 80, he had a quadruple bypass. Didn't know if he was ever gonna be the same, but he pulled through. He had a hawk trying to get some of his chickens, so he walked outside with his shotgun and tried to take a shot. He said his chest felt tight when he tried to shoot. He went back in the house and got his 22. Killed the hawk mid flight with a single shot. He lived 5 more years till the Alzheimer's got him. I hope I live that long, and I hope I'm at least half that good. |

Bad evening at my little spot. Very narrow field of fire due to encroaching housing and an increase in traffic on a rural road. Saw a few birds but didn't have a safe shot.
I did catch a one eyed yellow catfish that weighed about a pound or so on a piece of a hot dog. Released him to get bigger.

i finally found an affordable lease!
when i went to preview it it was busy as hell w/birds; now a cold front's coming and i'll bet it going to be pretty vacant, dammit! |

Dave sounds like he's having fun...
Me? I'm stuck around home because of work. Patiently awaiting the 17th. |

Yesterday and this morning sucked near Hillsboro. Yesterday I could chalk up to weather, but this morning sunny with a slight breeze
Hunting over harvested fields...that do not have a trace of grain left. This guide has Done well by me in the past, but his plan is not very good this year Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Fourteen birds total, for both morning and afternoon hunting on Friday and Saturday, in the Waco and Hillsboro area. Not the worst opening weekend of my life...but in 41 years of hunting those little grey bastards, I have seen a lot better.

We're hunting the south zone. Heading down Thursday evening to set up and swap lies before the opener.
We've hunted the same place for years, an exotic game ranch south of Castroville. Even bad years are halfway decent. Lots of farmland and grain fields. The owner says that there are Eurasian doves about this year. (Bigger than whitewing and they don't count against your limit) I used to use a pump .410 but these past few years I've switched to a 28 ga o/u. The round patterns better and the gun is much handier. Of course, I'm taking 6 shotguns along anyway. Ya never know. |
|
I got a Eurasian last year. That sucker hit the ground with a thud and I didnt know what that monster was until the guide pointed it out, and that you could shoot as many as you wanted. :-)
This weekend: We hunted a place northwest of Albany. They have a lot of fields within a 1 hour drive, so we hunted a different region with each hunt. I limited in about 2 hours on Friday night, got 13 on Saturday morning. The Sunday morning hunt was a lot lighter, only 8, but we left early. The morning hunts were really only busy right at daybreak... by 7:45 it was slowing down. The evening hunts were awesome from 5:00-6:00, but after that, really slow. |

North east burnet county on my families ranch.
Case of shells check Case of cold sodas check Gun check Doves––––––oh for the love of god========== flights of 100+ coming in to the freshly cut hay field. Results- limit in 1 hour- gun so dirty it was failing to eject Good times are had when I fry them up. Long story- I hunt my relatives ranch. The hay had been cut but note bailed due to my cousin being injured. The doves were coming in in flights of 100 plus and lighting in the field. Ended up shooting 3 boxes of shells and getting my limit in under an hour. The odd thing was that it seemed I was the only one hunting in my area because I heard very little shooting. I hunted saturday afternoon and sunday morning. The flocks were a mix of regular doves and white wings. Bad/good thing is that family members are the only ones allowed to hunt the ranch which means just me. |
|
Going out this coming weekend.
My buddy got his limit this past weekend. Location: Sanger / Krum area. |
|
I went dove hunting for the first time this weekend. I shot two and half boxes of ammo and killed three birds. Those fuckers are fast. I was always shooting behind them. Where we were hunting, it was scrub mesquite, so they'd fly over the tops of the trees going Mach 2. You had to make quick decisions, that's for sure.
There was a white wing coming in over the trees yesterday that you could see about 100 yards out. TRG nailed him almost head on at about 25 yards. A big puff of feathers blew up, the bird banked to our left and was taking a header into the pond bank. It got about a foot off the ground, swooped back up and flew away. Dave was right when he said they had Kevlar feathers. |

Thank you for posting that picture, TRG. T_AK_K, you are quite correct. I was having a great time The pic is from opening morning. I killed those four with my first 4 shots, then missed the fifth bird with both barrels. When the morning hunt was finished, I had killed seven birds with 10 shots. I was using 11/16 oz #7.5 in the modified barrel and 11/16 oz #6 in the full choke barrel. That evening I was 0 for 4, so my final aggregate for opening day was 7 birds with 14 shells with my .410. A 50% kill ratio with that thing is pretty darn good. Fuggit and TRG joined me Thursday evening, and even though the number of birds collected was far from the limit, the company and the shenanigans were certainly world class. This ranch does not have very many doves, and you have to walk them up and hunt them hard if you want more than two or three birds a day. I consider the birds in that pic to be trophies of the highest order. It was a great outing. Sixteen doves and two nice young cotton tail rabbits filled my game bag. The dove breasts and hearts are soaking in a heavy brine and the rabbits and their hearts are marinating for hasenpfeffer. Most of all I would like to thank my gracious host that allows me to use and hunt his property. I won't mention his name but Brother, I wish you would have been able to join us! I simply can not thank you enough for all of the things you have done for me since we first met almost 10 years ago. |

Joining Arfcom and meeting all you guys has been one of the best experiences in my life. Good friendships, funny shenanigans, the occasional gheyness - it's been a great deal. I won't even make a bad comment this time about the person mentioned above. This time. Except that DP didn't call me. Again. |

ZooCough, why would you travel 3 hours to hunt a hardscrabble cow shit laden thorn patch without running water and electricity that has few birds on opening day when you have already paid for a dove lease that is 10 minutes or less from your house? Not to mention the kind of unsavory misanthropes that you would be surrounded with... I'd turn down that kind of invitation myself.

He's also certified as a ref so he can call games and get paid. That's going to take up most weekends until the end of November. |
