I have a S&W 4516-1 coming but it only has one magazine.

I'm reading conflicting information as to what magazines will and will not work. I've read old posts from other boards where people say they use various 4516 magazines despite some magazines having the writing on the side saying only use in M4516-1 for example or only use in 4516-2, etc. and not to use in any other version of the 4516.

I have a 457 and 457S and I've read those 7-rd magazines will work as well.

So... anyone know what magazines will work? Yellow followers? Orange followers? Black followers? As I understand it the black follower 7-rd magazines were the latest versions.

Thanks.

All 4516 mags will work, the newer mags had redesigns due to the then changing hollow point designs for .45’s.

Seems like surplus mags have dried up recently.  I bit the bullet and bought some Promags that seem to work well.

Thanks to both of you for responding, I assumed that was the case but wanted to get more info before buying mags.

Factory mag prices seem to run between $45-$75... damn... if the ProMag's work just fine they seem to be in the $30-$35 range.

After paying $175 each to buy magazines with a ten round capacity for a Sako TRG22 (and that was when they were on a big sale!), $45-75 per magazine doesn't seem so horrible.   But factory Glock magazines at $30 each are certainly less painful.

I hope OP finds some magazines that will work at a decent price.

Ouch! That's expensive.

I have a few mags as I already have a 457 and 457S which supposedly takes the same mags. In reality, I probably have more mags than I will ever need or use.

Picked it up today, condition is as advertised. Doesn't look to be fired much. Very happy with the purchase.

Yeah, I agree.  …. Very nice, OP!

These compact .45s in the 3rd Gen 45XX-series  (essentially S&W’s version of an “officers model”) are very underrated guns.

Very nice!
I should get one of those to go with my 4506 & 4566.

I think I'll start saving up for a 1006... prices on those are inflated no doubt. But with a healthy stash to take some of the financial bite out of the deal, I can take action if a fair deal presents itself.

Congrats on a nice pistol. That is one of the biggest problems with 3rd gen guns, expensive mags. On a side note, I would get some extra springs and Numrich is a great place to find extra parts if need be. I got some for my 3913.

The GB prices are high but with any of the Smith 10XX-series guns the real ass-bite is the 10mm factory mags.

The well-used ones are going for $75 a pop, the like-new mags (with white followers) are going for north of $125 when they appear. It wouldn't surprise me if a NIB 10XX-series mag got $175-$200.

What did it cost you? Any chance it came from a guy/gal in Ga? I saw one for sale in a Ga forum recently for ~$525 and had spent up all my play $$ and missed getting it

Got it from Simpsons Collectables out of IL. It was $525 and with shipping and CC fee was $571, no tax, $20 transfer fee.
