Buddy is selling some guns. Has a 14-4 that he’s willing to part with.  Has a 1/4” surface rust spot above trigger, might come off with steel wool. Looks very clean otherwise.  Rubber grips.
$300-400?

I’d say $300-400 is going to fall into the “buy it now” category.  Here in CO you don’t see any S&W .38s go for under $400 unless it’s a beat up 442/642.  A prelock model like that would easily run north of $500, and possibly significantly more.

What barrel length?

bbl length may drive the value up, something like a 5" or a 8 3/8 might drive up collector value.  As a likely great shooter if you buddy sells it to you for $400 I'd say go for it.

I believe S&W called that the K-38 Masterpiece.  It was widely used as a target gun.  I used one at basic firearms instructor school way back in the revolver days--1985 or so.  They're fine guns, a little rust NBD.  So buy the damn thing.

In WY as well.
I would be all over that like a maggot on a gut pile.
I have a 14-2 in not so good a shape that I acquired off the joker of guns.
It may look like hell but the action is still tight and it shoots well.

So op, you go snarf up that revolver.

I think $450 would be fair given the description. The OP wasn't too far off.

Rust, not original grips are obvious minuses. 6" is the usual configuration, but not many people are in love with the 8-3/8" (I have one I got for cheap) so there's not much premium even though it's uncommon.

With original grips and "honest" wear these sell for about $600. The K-38 market is a funny one. Most collectors want high condition, all original guns, and those that want shooters here in 2020 probably already have one. The late GenX and younger crowd isn't buying them, for the most part. I pass on clean 14s all the time because...I already have several ;)

The market for S&W 14s is a funny one. These are thoroughbred target guns for serious shooters. The Bullseye revolver record was set with a model 14 a long time ago. However, the prices, as pointed out by previous posters, don't reflect their quality, especially when the condition is below 95% and without accessories. A model 15, the four inch version of the 14, is usually selling for more than the six inch version.

Picked up a Model 14 no dash with Sanderson target grips earlier this year off GB. Obviously a old target revolver. Paid $400 shipped and transferred for it. The grips alone are worth half that. $350-400, and if it is a good friend give him 4 bills for it.

I have two 14s, both 8-3/8" barrels. One is a no-dash, the other a dash-4. They both feel like Rolex watches, smooth as a super model's ass...........

I sold my S&W Model 14-5 in August of 2019 through Shooters Exchange in NC. I bought it new in 1992. It was shot but well taken care of. It was from a run of 2000 guns, 6" barrel, wood combat grips and all original with box and cleaning kit. It sold for $1300 in less than 2 hours!

My 14-4 was bought new by me and has been trouble free except for needing a new hammer nose (aka firing pin) after only 200 rds. It’s had in excess of 150k rds and god know how much dry firing.  After work by me the DA is around 6bs. And the SA around 2.  It’s probably my most relaxing and pleasurable gun to shoot. Sadly I rarely shoot it but if forced to choose it would be among the last 2-3 guns I sold.
