Wanted a P345 after they went out of production.  Ended up gettin a SR45 when they were gettin blown out for $270 (imo another under rated Ruger .45).  Still looking to grab one someday though.

My P90. I've had it for years (30+) but I haven't shot it for a long time.

Great thread!

To me, Ruger is always a second-rate gun company.  Never super innovative.  Never super refined.  Always survive because of their price.

Sure, they have some hits, like the 10/22 and LCP.  Could they survive without those two?

Love my P89 with Hogue wood grips, P95 trigger, Wolff 19lb hammer spring and stainless grip screws.

Also love my P345. I've even carried it from time to time.

Yes, yes they could. They're doing very well with their GP100 and the PC Carbine Series. The American line of bolt actions is a hit. And in the past the Mini-14 was flying off the shelves.

I forgot about their American line, you're right.

And the Mini-14 .... well, I've never fired one, I'll admit.  Always seemed like someone wanted his 10/22 in a bigger caliber (or maybe his M-14 in smaller, which makes sense given the name?).

Either way, nice reviews.

I remember those days Ayoob rocked rugers alot in the late 80's and 90's. Still want a P90 but they seem rather pricey these days.

My late uncles P90 was the first .45 acp that I ever fired. Been in love with big bores ever since.

I hated the mag release on the early P series pistols. It seemed like Ruger went out of their way to make it bad.

I probably have a dozen P Series Rugers. A KP89 was the first handgun I owned. Rugers were affordable enough that I started accumulating them, P89 thru the P345. I have a couple of KP89X which has 9MM & 30 Luger barrels. Are they worth a lot of money? No but they are reliable guns. Ruger builds a strong firearm. I have single action and double action revolvers from them as well.

My first gun at 18 was a brand new Ruger P89 decock model 9mm loaded with Fed Hydra Shoks.

It was big and heavy with below average ergonomics for the time (Beretta 92 and S&W 3rd gen) but it was reliable and the price was affordable for me.

It served the purpose until I sold it off and bought a used Glock 22 around 1991-92

I've owned, shot and carried about every quality gun since but I'm still a Glock guy on and off duty.

Late to the game, but excellent write up. I remember the P85/89 and later on the P90 very well starting in the late 80's. Every gun rag back then was 9mm vs 45ACP. You couldn't avoid or not over hear the discussion in any firearms related setting. Myself being a Browning Hi-Power guy at the time was never mixed up in the scheme on which 9mm to buy. Yes, the early Ruger auto's were ruff and some called ugly. Man did they work and reliable from what I saw at my gun club. And yes Massad Ayoob did push the P90 45ACP card when they were first introduced. This thread brought back memories for sure. Thanks!
