I noticed that.  What are they worried about?  The mammoth can only go extinct once.

They're about to get real alive again, in Russia...

Ivory is classy, pearl is for New Orleans pimps.

They are quite nice. I decided it was easier and cheaper to get a set of N frame "Cokes" made by John Culina in American holly. Has the look of ivory without the exorbitant cost or governmental hoops to jump through.

I never thought ivory was "white trash." Are you sure you're not thinking about faux Mother of Pearl?

I think ivory and stag look good on 1911s.

The advantage of mammoth or fossil ivory is that it is usually much more stable than regular ivory.
50,000 years tends to settle things out.

I have some real ivory grips, and despite good care of them they developed a small crack (since repaired).

I much prefer fossil ivory.

I love the look of ivory, and I understand they hold up and age well, too. I don't like that idea that animals are harmed to get it and I don't super trust the typical sources to be on the up and up.

However.... Mammoth is extinct, so I have no problem with that since I didn't kill anything to make it happen. I really love the look of Mammoth Tooth, but I have been shopping (half assed) for a nice set of off white for a 1911 for the last 5+ years. with young kids that $400 can be better spent elsewhere, and something more important always shows up.

“Son, only a pimp in a Louisiana whore- house carries pearl-handled revolvers. These are ivory.”

I bought my mammoths from Boone, and have been very pleased with them.  Wonderful feeling in the hand.  Hard to photograph well, but the grain structure is beautiful in the light.

I understand your feelings on modern elephant ivory and some of the unsavory sourcing methods involved, although I would still purchase modern grips if I could.  If mammoth is a bit too much of a reach, American Holly is very similar to the look and grain structure, although not the feel.  The grips on my Nighthawk are American Holly, because I use it in bowling pin competition and did not want to be unduly conscious of my grips instead of fully focused on the pins.

It's the wife that doesn't like the idea of an animal being killed just for ivory, and I don't disagree. I know it's possible to get stuff from drops or natural death, but I just don't trust the level of paperwork involved in that. Mammoth is extinct, so it was way dead before it was grips, that sits better with me.

the wood looks nice but one of the things I've always wanted is a set of the real thing. I've seen some similar woods and plastics that have the look, but not the feel, which I understand to be like half the reason for owning them. Also it seems like cool old school bad ass rich dudes did it, and while I am none of those things, I aspire to be.

I’ve got a pretty big selection of Sambar Stag grips as well as a set of real ivory.  I love real grips.  The feel is great and they look awesome.
