A better picture, had pachs on it for the longest time but decided to splurge on some VZs. Haven’t shot it yet with them on it, but they are comfortably aggressive, more so than the rosewood double diamonds that were on my Colt XSE ( I miss that gun. )

Grandpa's aircrew issue 1911a1 was bequeathed to me today. He was a bomber navigator during WWII.
Seems to be in fine condition. I only became aware of it's existence a couple years ago. Attached File |

At a glance it looks original and little used, a 3rd logo Rand with darkened minor parts appropriate for this era and wear patterns. It would be an extra treat if the magazine had a spot welded spine, the General Shaver Division of Rand, the lack of such a mag does not make it incorrect, Risdon, M.S. Little and Scovill were issued/used with this weapon (Colt's magazine sub-contracts marked C-R, C-L and C-S). Cant see the serial number to know shipping date/destination (our Clawson Bible has that data), but consider; Many Union Switch were issued to aircrew and lost over Europe, Africa and the Med. Same with Rand's, one of only two companies (US&S) making large-issue Service Pistols not building weapons in civilian life. Rand made typewriters, electric shavers and accessories. Rand was the highest US production pistol of WWII yet early War quality was inconsistent and many quotas missed. A manufacturer of relatively complex civilian products, Rand knew how to adapt. They corrected their flaws and outperformed all other sidearm companies; over a four month period during November and December 1944, January and February 1945, Remington Rand produced a staggering 50,000 pistols per month. |
