29,69 or 629.
Asking for a very old friend. |

Four inch 329 airweight in a Simply Rugged holster set up for cross draw.
Three inch 69 is also nice. The 69 nicer to shoot but the 329 nicer to carry. |

Carry for what purpose?
In what environment (ie desert mountains or on salt water, etc.)? Carry concealed or not? These things all influence the decision a bit. |

For true concealment, Charter Arms Bulldog (if 44spl is considered adequate).

Then any one of those (29, 629, 69) would work, pick whether you prefer blued or shiny. Then pick whether you want 5 or 6 rounds. I've carried a 4" L and a 4" N frame a lot (steel L, alloy N) and it's no big deal to me. OWB high and tight holster and it's concealed under a loose t-shirt. 3" and shorter is even easier. IWB is doable too. Might want to check speedloader availability on the 5 shot guns. |

I carried a 4" 29 for a couple years. No issues, but I was in my mid 20's.
Today, if I wanted a carry .44 it would be one of those 5" 629s with the barrel profile like the 686's and 586's. Looked at them 4 or 5 years ago but the dealer kept telling me my stainless Dan Wesson .44 was only worth $300. I had to just smile, take it back out of his hands, put it back in the original box with all the paperwork/grips, etc. and walk away. Along with a promise to never buy from him again. That 10" Dan Wesson ribbed heavy profile barrel/shroud is too big/heavy to carry all the time. |

A 69 is on my short list.
I have ccw'd a 629, but not in a way that's appropriate for edc in town. |

I carry a 629 loaded with 300 grain hard cast during hunting season. I've always wanted to take a deer with it or at least deliver the "coup de Gras" shot if it came to that. I've never had the chance as the rifle or slug gun does its job and theyre DRT when I get to them.
I get sick and tired of carrying that thing after only 5 days. I cant imagine using it for EDC. Its WAY easier to daily carry my Sig 229R or Springfield XD subcompact with extra mags than lug that hand cannon around..... |

S&W model 296. Titanium/Scandium frame, hammerless L frame 44 special made for only two years. Very light weight, and very carry friendly as there just isn't anything to snag on clothing.

I'd use the 329 for urban carry. About 25 ounces for a 4" gun versus about 40 ounces for a 4" stainless 629. That means more recoil, especially with full bore magnums - but for urban use you're probably not carrying Buffalo Bore loads. Sticking with 44 special or light magnums, recoil should be fairly reasonable despite the light weight.
The 69 is 37.4 ounces vs the 629's 41.5 ounces (per S&W's numbers). Some weight savings, but nowhere close to the 329's weight savings. |

Unless you’ve handled one, it’s hard to describe how much lighter And trimmer a M69 is vs all the other standard models including the mountain gun
I have the 4.2 and is a dream as an all around woods bopper gun. I have to believe the shorter version would be ideal for carry. One benefit of the 69 is you can use a K frame holster, of which there are tons of options. |

Are you saying you use them in K frame holsters? Any high quality L frame holster I own is too big for any K frame I own. ETA there is no shortage of L and N frame holster options out there. |

Quoted: 29,69 or 629. Asking for a very old friend. View Quote I have all of the above, plus previously owned two model 329s. The 629 Mountain Gun was my favorite for a long time. Then the Model 69 cam along and I bought one, and love it. Then the 2 3/4 inch model 69 came out and I bought one. This one is the clear winner for a concealed 44. Both of my model 329s had to go back to Smith for repairs. One blew the little blast shield out, the other had the frame crack below the barrel. No more scandium magnums for me. |

My 4” 69 fits perfectly in an old Bianchi that’s marked “SW Med Frame”. Pretty sure the holster pre dates the L frame. And I have a Simply Rugged sourdough that fits K and L frames just fine, but those holsters are pretty versatile on what they fit anyway. |

To clarify about my M69, I use several of the same holsters for my 4 inch M19, which is a K. I switched the grips to Hogue round butt K grips, the ones that used to come standard on the stainless guns. I admit I’m not fluent in the nuances of the L frame Guns.

For carrying-329PD. For carrying and some shooting-Mountain Gun. For shooting and some carry-Any version of the 29 with 4" or less barrel. Weight is good and bad.

S&W model 296 if you can find one. Titanium/scandium framed, 5 shot, hammerless 44 special that looks like a hammerless airweight S&W on steroids. They were only made for 2 years though so they are sort of hard to find, but they are wonderful to carry. Recoil is very sharp though....

Agreed, L frame holsters are to loose and good k frame holsters are to tight. |

I really enjoy carrying my 329 PD.
Shooting it is another proposition :) I generally keep it stoked with 44 Special ammo. I really enjoy the "carryability" over the 329. |
