And there’s the rub.

If they make a true 1:1 copy, which people would want, it theoretically could suffer from the same reliability quirks. But people would blame the foreign manufacturing and poor QC, so their brand takes a hit.

If they make one to be reliable, which people would want, they might have to “improve” on the design, which takes it away from being a true (interchangeable parts) copy, which people would bitch about.

I don’t mind clones. I own a couple. But I want them to be 1:1 interchangeable. And since I’m not buying a Luger as a carry gun, I’m OK with it being a bit finicky. But I imagine that’s an iffy proposition for a gunmaker to embrace since it’s their capitol at risk.

This. Making a good copy of a bad design is a financial risk that could break their reputation even if they do everything right. Lugers are cool, but they’re not good.

LOL
The top end Tisas 1911s and 2011s go for $1K or so.

A Luger requires much more quality machining, intricate cuts inside the frame and lots of QC compared to a 1911.
That's why Germany replaced the P08 with the P38.

I think I posted a while back that I'd like to see a C96 clone also.
It'd be nice if they offered all of these models in high polish blue and polished nickel.

With proper ammunition and in good *original* condition, a P.08 Luger runs like a sewing machine. it's super smooth, very reliable and very pleasant to shoot.

The 9mm P.08 Lugers are designed for standard pressure 9mm Luger ammunition, with weights at or below 124 grains.

Most Luger reliability problems trace to one of four issues:

- A weak recoil spring.  In general, when you acquire a Luger and periodically there after, place a layer of masking tape on the ears of the receiver.  The toggle will come back under recoil but should not impact the ears. If the tape is getting cut, the recoil spring is too weak for the ammunition being used.

- A weak magazine spring.  Some of these magazines are well over 100 years old and most others over 80 years old.  Those springs are not what they used to be and they are often also corroded.

- A poor condition or poor quality aftermarket magazine.  Feed lip adjustment and hardness matter.

- A pistol with a mix of parts.  The P.08 had a high percentage of parts numbered to the gun and that reflected the higher degree of hand fitted parts involved.  Today, some "correct" guns will have extractors, side plates, etc with the right 4 digit numbers but they are off other lugers with the same 4 digit numbers as a collector tries to create an "original" Luger.   The problem is many of those mis matched parts were in fact properly fitted by a German armorer, while the replacement 4 digit part is not.

The later commercial clones tended to have poor reliability as they were not made to the same standard of fitting.

There is nothing wrong with the original P.08 design as made by the military contractors over the years - other than it is very expensive to produce as noted above the reliability issues with the luger were acquired, not built into the design.

But it is not amenable to *low cost* mass production and prior efforts to make commercial clones have not resulted in reliable pistols.

If the toggle doesn't touch the ears, how does the knee-joint break?

Yup, that's a fundamental aspect of the action.

If they make a Luger in 10mm I'll buy 2!

Make it in stainless steel and I'll sell a kidney!

Interestingly they're still on the company's website.  Anyone hear anything more about them?  Brownell's is listed as one of their distributors so maybe the site could assist in some way.  I asked if these had actually gone into production and would be available via their contact us page; guess we'll see what and if anything comes of it.  Maybe it'd help if they got a bunch of people requesting them.  I still want a C96 too.

The only "unreliable" Lugers I have seen are 1917 Erfurts cracking the rear toggle link.  If the gun isn't working then try a different mag, replace worn springs, and use 124gr fmj.  They are very reliable guns.

A shooter grade original isn't that hard to find but a clone that can be abused isn't a terrible option.

Probably “open carry” for all sorts of weird street cred.

For $800, I’d probably be into one as well.  Pretty epic video game star on top of the historical relevance.

The P.08 Luger is designed to shoot FMJ, standard pressure ammunition.

It is reliable with standard pressure FMJ.

Invariably, some future US buyer will fail to understand that, and try to blame the gun, the Turks, the design, etc.
