Best .40 pistol?
For what? For everything... that would be highly subjective.
Until I dropped the match trigger kit into mine, I didn't enjoy it as much.
Sig 226 or 229 but again, just my preference.
Trusting your life to the benevolence of an armed criminal is not a strategy, it is stupid!
I enjoy the full size very much. If I could only have one 40 cal pistol it would be a USP no doubt
The ray of light was a bullet hole
Yeah the full size USP 40 was built from the ground up to be a 40 caliber. Best 40 no doubt. The Sig P229 isn't too bad either. Basically a beefed up P228.
Love my USP40.

USP.
Turned mine into a custom combat, still need sights though. ![]() |

Another vote for the Beretta 96A1. I also have a G22, G23 and a Smith M&P compact in .40 and The Beretta is by far the easiest to shoot well.
VOTE TRUMP 2020.
I love the USP .40 full size, and the compact is good too. I haven't shot the Beretta 96 series yet. I tried a couple of P229s and didn't like them, but that may just be my personal thing (everyone else seems to love them).
Trump 2020.
Really love my USPc in 40. I have a full size USP in 45 and I bet the 40 is just as good. I also have a P226 in 40 with a 357sig barrel but im torn between the P226 and the USPc. I'd love to shoot a beretta 96 though...
M&P and P320 deserve a serious look.
Of the .40 S&W pistols I've shot; HK USP (full size), S&W M&P40 (full size), Glock 22, Glock 23, and Springfield XD40...the USP was the most pleasurable , with the M&P40 being runner-up.
I had a USPc 40 for a short time at work until switching to the P2000 in 40. I carried the P2000 everyday for 10 years and preferred everything about the P2000 over the USPc. I got a deal on a P320 in 40 cal a few years ago and really like the Sig trigger over the P2000 LEM trigger. David

.40 I have had
USP 229R Glock 22 Beretta 96 MP full-size gen 1 MP compact gen 2 Only one I still have is the USP. I don’t know what it is but that gun the most accurate pistol I have, and the softest shooting. Mine has trijicon HD and a jet funnel (16+1 capacity). My current load I shoot frequently is a 135 plated FP with a stout charge of long shot or CFE |

For anyone who might be wondering, the Gen5 Glock .40's do shoot a little softer than previous generations, I have Gen5 27, 23 and 22 and the wider slide does help, not that I ever complained about it before but it does cut down recoil a bit, which for some reason is always used to paint the .40 in a negative light.
I've only shot two .40 handguns that felt like I was shooting 9mm.

.40 Supreme Overlord Miami_JBT is my favorite Miami_JBT.
![]() I used to be a .40 hater but I've come around. I think it was my friend's Gen 3 Glock 23 and Glock 27 that turned me off to it initially. What I've learned since is you can shoehorn a .40 in a 9mm design and end up with crap results, like the Pre-Gen 4 .40 Glock family. Purpose-built .40 designs are usually really good though. (Corollary theory: a 9mm built from a .40 design is usually exceptional.) Hands-down my favorite is the USP 40 Tactical. Modified with the jet funnel and 16-round mags, it's a machine. I typically don't drink the HK koolaid, but as long as you do your part, the USP will not let you down. Of all the ones I've handled and shot, it's been the best. Honorary mention to the CZ-40B for it's quirky nature and interesting history. Such a great shooter, but nothing something you'd call common. I really want a .40 PCC that's not built off an AR. Bad time to be wanting such a thing. ![]() |

Today was a range day and the 96A1 found it's way into the bag again. I was shooting it and a 9mm Beretta compact and I really can't tell that there is much if any difference in recoil between the two.
I shoot the compact slightly better but the .40 96 is just downright fun to shoot. |

I have larger hands, and even though he removed the mag safety I just didn't enjoy my time with it much. Probably due to its shape, the hammer came close to hitting my hand a couple of times and racking the slide with the (excellent) rear target sight was somewhat awkward. The Beretta 96 just fits me like a glove, and is super easy to shoot well.......for a whole lot le$$ ![]() |

I have owned five different handguns in .40, the first was a Ruger P90/91 I believe, the second was a S&W 410/411 model (not sure about the exact number), the fourth was a Glock 23, fourth was a HK USP 40 full size and the last was a Sig 229.
Of all of these pistols, I miss the S&W and the USP the most, with the USP being my favorite. The Glock 23 blew up on me at the range, I was shooting factory Federal American Eagle 180 grain, so these (I had two of them) went away real quick. But wish I had the USP back... A good friend has my USP pistol, but wants to keep it. |
I've owned
96G Elite II USP P226R P320F M&P40 Still own the M&P, wish I kept the USP though. The 320 trigger (post recall) was horrid. The 226R was DAK and I actually REALLY enjoyed it too. Super smooth. I'd still like to try a PX4 in .40 someday too. Full sized. |

I don't find mine to be particularly soft shooting, but definitely accurate and handles 40sw well. I prefer my P226 to my USPc though. I seem to shoot it a hair better as well. |

I have to say, that the Sig 226 and 229 are a joy to shoot in .40. I did shoot a USP .40 in the 90s and it was horrible. You'd think if I say I'm buying 300 guns, they'd send a demo model to T&E that could get through an entire mag without a jam. I'm sure they've fixed those problems by now but literally every other brand had no malfunctions throughout our testing. Sig won hands down as the favorite among our T&E group ( 15 officers of varying skill levels ). The department of course went with the #3 choice of Glock because they were free with trade in.
