I recently bought a Guncrafter Hellcat 9mm, Government model. To make it affordable I sold a custom Dan Wesson and a Les Baer Commanche. I was very hesitant about selling them both because they were excellent pistols, but I went ahead and did it anyway. That was a great decision.

As well made as the Dan Wesson was, the Hellcat has a higher quality build. The fit and finish are perfect. The trigger breaks right at 2 pounds 10 ounces, clean and crisp.

This is the second group I shot with it at 15 yards

First range trip results

I shot this group over several mags at 15 yards off hand as the sun went down.

I am a huge Dan Wesson fan, and I would not have believed the difference in quality until this Guncrafter came. This is not a slam on DW, it is simply an illustration of what a hand made 1911 is like.

That first pic just doesn't look like a good crown on the barrel. Looks like something it blocking the crown.

The crown has a mirrored polish. That thing you see is a reflection of my ugly but smiling face.

I’m sure that is some bullet proof finish.  What is it?

I used to shoot uspsa with a guy who is a marketing guy for guncrafter. He says some good shit is in the pipe for them.

That said I’m glad you like it.

Melonite covered with cerakote.

And I have to say that I find that odd barrel bushing really attractive.

It's an interesting variation of the run of the mill bushing.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, ... or that some 'smith dicked-up the crown.

Looks like it shoots great though. Nice blaster.

Call me inexperienced and lacking in knowledge, but I just can't conceive the connection between "some 'smith dicked-up the crown" and Guncrafter. Sorry.

Looks like it shoots great though. Nice blaster.
Thanks, it is a great blaster TBH. Can't wait to try it at distance.

It looks like some strange reflection, if you look at the other pictures the dark spot is always between the bore & the table.

The diamonds are cut at 90 degrees instead of 60 degrees on traditional checkering, so they don't feel as sharp as say 20 lpi @ 60 degrees.

Looks like a good shooting GI.

Love their work, I prefer the No Name line personally.

I do like they way that have done the Hellcat bushing. Looks a great deal more thought out than Wilson or Nighthawk’s offerings.

Wouldn't 90 degrees be straight up and square? They look like standard pyramids.

What keeps the bushing from rotating?  How is the recoil spring retained?

It has a plug of sorts that fits the end of the spring. That presses against the solid bushing and keeps it from rotating.

OP, can you compare the GC with the Baer? I would think the Baer groups would have been as good as or (perhaps) just a bit better than what the GC model did?

I admit to being a Baer Kool-Aid drinker as I own three of them. I know Baer is known as lacking on their final finish. But I don't see a lot (if any) jump in quality from one of my Baers to my new Nighthawk.

Please enlighten me, OP. Also, may I ask where the retail is on the one you bought?

OK, so I guess you have to take off the top end and then pull the guide rod and spring out that way, right?

I loved my LB.

About the groups of the LB Custom Carry Commanche vs the Hellcat: I shoot .45 better than 9mm most of the time, and I don't know why. I have shot some incredibly small groups with .45 1911s, whether it was LB, Dan Wesson, or SA. There is nothing about the LB that would make me think it would be of such a quality that it would naturally be more accurate than the GI. The GI is demonstrably better made and fitted.

I think the retail was around $3,800, I paid less because I bought it lightly used.

15 yards, 18 rounds offhand.
