How secure are the red dot sight mounting plates that replace the rear sights?

This would be an alternative to having a slide milled, or if the slide cannot be milled.

Any paticular manufacturer better than others?

Most of us (everyone at my department except me, mine was milled) are using the Trijicon RM44 plate.

This thing is robust!!  Much tougher than the Vortex or UTG plates I’ve seen.

Honestly they work fine for the most part. Not as elegant as slide milling but it'll function as it should. I have an EGW plate on my HK while I wait to have it sent off for milling. My Glock and CZ are both milled by Primary Machine.

I have several Dueck Defense mounts, and I have not had any issues. They have built in back up sights as well.
