I'm researching defense/carry 9mm ammo. I have a Sig P320 w. 3.9" barrel and a Springfield DS Prodigy with a 4.25" barrel. I'd like to narrow the myriad of choices to about 4 different rounds and see what works most reliably. I have read good things about Cor-Bon, Speer Gold Dot, Black Hills Barnes, Federal Premium HST. What are your opinions regarding 115gr vs. 124gr. vs. 147gr.?

Federal 9mm 124 grain HST sku: P9HST1

This is my go to 9mm load, easy to find and a proven bad guy stopper.

Federal HST 147gr or Underwood 68gr +P Lehigh XD would be my two choices for factory ammo.

For 9mm, I prefer Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P.

After reading a ton of reviews / gel tests etc etc I’ve ordered a box each of the following:
Barnes TAC XPD 115gr. +P
Federal HST 124gr
Federal HST 147gr
Sig V-Crown 124gr
Hornady Critical Defense 115g

All of these seem to have reliable expansion, are within FBI penetration range and expand to at least .5”

I will be testing these in a Springfield DS Prodigy 4.25” (when I get it back from Springfield). I’ll rule out any that don’t cycle reliably.  I’ll also see if there is any noticeable difference in recoil impulse and how accurate I am with each.

Don’t worry I’m not going to chose based on one 20 rd box each. I will make sure anything I use for carry or home defense runs reliabity and that (to me) means at least a few hundred rounds with 0 malfunctions.

I only wish I had a place to shoot near me where I could do my own ballistic gel test.

With any of the modern designed hollow points, it is a bit like dueling banjos. They will all do the job if you do yours ( hitting a critical structure)

Don’t get caught up in minuscule differences in gel performance or this test shows a better penetration, or this one expansion etc.

As long as they meet FBI protocol standards ( not at all perfect but the only really standardized yardstick we have) use the one that runs your gun reliably and shoots most accurately for you. If it is one of the somewhat less expensive ones even better.

Modern handguns are so much better at reliable feeding than they were when I started shooting in the 1970’s, and hollow point performance from those day can’t even be compared to what we have today.

My main resource for the choices I made
Link Posted: 4/26/2023 9:51:02 PM EDT
[#15]
HST 124gr for multiple bbl lengths, HST 147gr for longer bbls and barrier-blind std pressure 135gr Critical Duty for my reload.
Of course, all handguns are relatively poor 'stoppers' regardless of caliber or bullet used so the point may be moot.

HST or Gold Dot

I prefer the 124+P in both but 147gr isn’t bad.
Link Posted: 4/26/2023 10:15:06 PM EDT
[#17]
124/147 hst
124/135+p critical duty
124/147 gold dot

V crown or critical defense don’t reach the 12” minimum reliably and 12” isn’t enough in my opinion. Penetration>expansion

Also, clear gel tests are nearly useless in my opinion, they do not offer the same results as “real” ballistic gel, a lot of those luckygunner penetration numbers are a lot higher than they would be in real gel

True. It also depends on the % gelatin. I believe the FBI uses 10% organic gelatin. Even that isn't perfect. Just trying to find some good candidates with the info thats available. My criteria in order of importance 1) Reliability 2) stopping power 3)recoil (if theres a difference) and 4) which cartidges are the prettiest ... just kidding about the  last one

Data from people that actually adhere to the scientific standard for terminal ballistic testing would be a much "better place."

The ammoquest series on youtube uses real 10% ordinance gel for many of their tests, so I trust those results more than luckygunner. Some of their early videos use the clear ballistics stuff though, so pay attention. Here's his conclusion video:
9mm Ammo Quest Winner and wrap up
.

One key take away: hard to go wrong with any of the HST line.

My preference in order.

Federal HST 147 gr
Federal HST 124 gr
Speer Gold Dot 124 gr +P

As others have said, Federal HST in both 124gr and 147gr. No need to spring for their +P stuff. I was surprised by how well-performing the 147gr was in 10% gel tests.

Federal 124 HST for EDC SD  , Underwood 90 grain extreme  defender +P+  for hard targets /glass, vehicle , body armor ,wall board .

I may be in the minority here ,but I have switched to the Underwood xtreme defender 90 grain +P+ 9mm . Very low recoil, very low flash, very accurate in short barrel S&W Shield +. Bill Wilson thought so much of the Lehigh defense bullet ,he bought the company.  The Underwood xtreme defender uses that bullet and at $20.00 a box of 20.00 when bought directly from Underwood  it is a great choice for performance  and cost . I'm a believer in the fluid transfer technology .

I now carry Lehigh XD's in both my 9mm and 10mm handguns.   They are super impressive.

This. Except I haven’t been around any where near that long, let alone gun-shooting age.

Normally carry HST though.

With the 4.25 barrel, any of the Federal HST, 147 gr Gold Dot, 124 gr +p Gold Dot, Critical Duty 135 gr will all perform well. My duty round is the 147 gr. Gold Dot. It you also have shorter barrel pistols the 147 Gold Dot and Critical Duty do not perform as well. Off duty I carry the 147 gr HST.

STAY AWAY FROM COR BON! The company IS NOT the same company they were during the 1990s. I had some all copper bullets from them (proprietary to Cor Bon, AKA NOT the Barnes bullets) and they have had numerous problems with being overpressure. Blown primers, pierced primers, etc. I ordered some of the Barnes bullets DIRECTLY from the company and they never came. I was charged for them but they never came. I called them about the overpressure rounds and they wanted me to send them back. Sure I said. Just as soon as you send me the bullets I ordered that NEVER CAME but paid for. They have NEVER called me back. I'm done with them 4 ever.
