For stockpile
7 or 8 rnd My only 1911 is a Remington R1 solely used as a suppressor host of that dictates your suggestion That said, I’ve told myself for years I want a TRP or Dan Wesson but I can’t imagine mags for an R1 not working in either of those two I digress, what should I look for? |

i was able to get Remington factory mags at Natchez shooting supplies, a few months back. they are stainless steel, and the same price as the blued ones were.

For an “economy “ mag, metal form. The seven rounders especially work great. For a good number of years metal form was the supplier for colt.
While I have not tried them I have heard mec gar are good too. Also mixed in with metal form some colts ship with checkmate mags also. Any of these 3 will be under 20 bucks each maybe even under 15 if you shop around |

CMC shooting stars
Whatever the manufacturer is for Springfield that makes their 7rd GI style mags and don't kill the messenger, but I've heard lots of good things about the cheap $8 Sarco imported mags. Don't have any, but I've been thinking of grabbing a few for range bangers. |

Take a look at Joes1911magmania on ebay. $85.99 for 5 mags, shipped. I've bought a bunch for the range and have never had an issue.

They were an especially good deal when they were a little cheaper, but very fair price for very good magazines |

I'm new to the 1911 game, but just got more Mec-Gar 8 rounders on order. Have 2 of the Wilsons 10 rounders, they are nice, but honestly the 8 round is just the right size for carrying extra mags. I also have a bunch of MecGars for my Tanfoglios (CZ75 flavor) and have nothing but good results from them, the 1911 mags seem to be of the same quality...
Although I read comments about them not being 'good' oddly enough they seem just as good as the Wilsons and even slightly better in that the follower has a metal-insert for the slide-stop to contact. IDK, time will really tell, I don't see any problems with the two brands I have thus far. |

The best advice is to get one example of each to see which one works best with your chosen ammo and your pistol.
Metalform, Mec-Gar, and Check-Mate are on the lower end of the price scale. Wilson, McCormick, and Tripp are on the higher end of the price scale. Here are my go-to sources for magazines: Thunder Mountain Top Gun Greg Cote I personally like the Check-Mate extended tube, hybrid feed lip, 8 round mag the best. The problem with Check-Mate is inconsistent quality control which means you cannot be confident that every one you buy will work out-of-the-box. I've diagnosed and fixed enough of these QC problems that it's no big thing and takes little time to do but most folks don't want to go through the trouble. I don't mind because of how well they feed. FWIW, I think the TMC Ultimate Magazine is the best 8 round magazine and will run out-of-the-box with no issues. This LINK may be of some interest to you. |

Some ppl have said the new production mags from SARCO have been surprisingly good. Tweaking followers for slide stop engagement seem to be a common comment.

I've got 20-30 USGI/CheckMate coded 7 rd mags and dozen or so of Wilson 47Ds. Also some of their 10 rd mags. Used to shoot ISPC with Devel/Shooting Star/McCormick 8 rd mags back in the 90s. Never had any issues with any of my mags. They all feed and lock the slide back.

Another +1 for the GI Checkmate - recognized thusly:
Attached File There are fakes all over the place - first look for the correct packaging (these are taken from my "war reserve" obtained during transition to the M9) Attached File All (I think there is one exception IIRC) real GI mags have the lettering on the baseplate correct when the mag "points left". The fakes "point right". The other thing about the Chinese fakes is the witness holes are "too high" compared to the correct placement shown below. Attached File |

Why skimp on mags, it's where the rubber meets the road. Cheap mags will turn the most expensive guns into shit. Stick with Wilsons or Chips, don't look back. Been wanting to try a Tripp, the followers look ideal.

Mec Gar mags have always performed flawlessly for me. I have a stockpile of them for 45 and 9mm 1911 as well as a handful for Beretta 92. Best bang for your buck in my opinion.

I echo what pliny and other pro-CMC mag posters stated above.
Why turn a $750 (or more) handgun into a club to save a few bucks? When you life may depend on it? An analogy would be purchasing a $750 rifle and installing a $150 scope and mount. If you can't afford proper magazines, you're probably not shooting the gun much (and probably inherited same now that I think about it). Face it, the 1911 system is detachable box magazine sensitive. Most 1911 guys know this and go the Wilson / CMC / or comparable equipment route. |

NOT Colt mags….. heard the the base plates split….on the stainless 8 round Colts made by checkmate for $22.75 each.
Wilson combats with the dimple on the feed ramp. I am probably going to get some Tripp Research. Tripp is not exactly value… Buy right once… Attached File |

Another vote for metalform. I use the ones with the round followers 100% in every 1911 I've had

Except for Wilson's. I keep a few loaded for carrying. I've got 5-6 cmc 10rd mags and I've had to swap springs. Now I store them unloaded. |

At the cost of ammo these days, you will never recupe the price / performance / lifetime cost difference between a cheap and top end magazine.
The days of buying a cheap gun and sorting through it has gone the way of scrap-value priced Cold War surplus ammo. |

I got some of these from Sarco sometime back. They seem to be a Korean version of the ACT magazine. Seems to be very well made. I got two of the blue ones (now out of stock), and 2 of the Stainless Steel. They are marked “RWB”.
Periodically, Sarco has a “Free Shipping “ on orders over $40, which would be 3 mags. https://www.sarcoinc.com/1911-45-cal-8rd-stainless-magazine/ |
