What does everyone prefer for Subcompact 9mm handguns and why? For quite some time I’ve been carrying my issued ammo (Winchester Ranger 127gr +P) in a G26 as my everyday carry. But I just got a G43 and was wondering if there might be a better choice. I know, probably all name brand defensive loadings will do alright, but I’m just curious if anyone has selections specifically chosen for such a small gun with such a short barrel.

My guess is if you had to shoot someone with that 127gr load, they'd immediately regret their life decisions that landed them to getting shot in the first place.

I’ve been thinking about this. I’m not sure I want to run the 127gr +P in the G43. I’ll be honest, I find the G43 more challenging to shoot than double stack pistols and I’m not sure I want the increased recoil and muzzle flip in such a small gun. So I’m curious about non +P loadings which will still perform well out of such a short gun. I’m thinking the 147gr offerings may be the way to go.

I also wouldn’t really be that averse to using the 127gr +P, I could practice and get used to it, but I’d like something I can buy myself and practice with. I don’t want to be reliant upon issued ammo and the Winchester Ranger T line can be hard to find commercially.

I run a mixture of 124 gold dots, 147 golden sabers, 115 FMJ and 147 FMJ. One of them will get it done.

Stay away from +p in the G43,as it tends to make slide velocity exceed magazine spring response. I recommend 124 gr Gold Dot or HST.

Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P is what I carry. It doesnt recoil too bad in g43 and is great for dispatching hogs. I also think lighter and faster in shorter barrels could result in more reliable expansion. I also have carried underwood 147gr +p+ Gold Dots in a g19.

Here's a pic of a boar I finished off with Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P through the eye socket:

I've been running 124 gr. +P HST for years in both my wife's and my G43s. Never had any issues, in fact, I've never even heard of this issue with G43s and +P ammuniton...

Another vote for 147gr HST.  And one of the advantages of the G26/G27 is that they accept the 4" G19/G22 barrels, giving more velocity. Can't do that with the newer Glocks like the G43.

147gr HSTs

Their velocity window goes down pretty low.

I load them to 930fps from a 3" revolver barrel and keep them in my wife's shield.

I use 124 grain HST, standard pressure, in a p365. Basic reasoning is: 1) HSTs are proven, 2) 124 over 147 because I'm a little leary of getting too close to expansion threshold with those short barrels, and 3) standard pressure over +P because I like my training ammo and my carry ammo to act similarly (recoil, etc).

But these are honestly small reasons. I think any of the HSTs besides the 150 grain micro-compact loads are close enough for me that it doesn't really matter much. And there are plenty of other brands that perform pretty well enough that, again, it doesn't really matter that much.

Yup.

Much easier to just standardize on 147gr HST for everything 9mm. It's been tested a LOT, including in SC length barrels.

Just test it in your carry choice. I've read of guns that potentially have issues feeding 147gr, but not 124gr. I personally haven't had anything that had issues with 147gr HST, but it's always good practice to test your carry ammo in your carry gun.

Heavier bullets lose less velocity in shorter barrels than lighter bullets.

147 grain bullets remain closer to their design velocity.

Note that lighter bullets gain more from longer bullets than heavier bullets and heavier bullets don't gain nearly as much velocity from longer barrels.

The muzzle blast is more pleasant with 147 grain bullets too, especially if having to shoot inside or from sitting in a vehicle.

On the other hand, Speer sells short barrel 9mm Gold Dot ammo that has 124 grain bullets, loaded to +P.

In the Glock 43, I like 147 grain bullets.

I prefer to carry 124gr +p HST or Gold dot in all of my 9s because they preform the best through auto glass which is a priority for me however I would not fell uncomfortable with any flavor of HST. Keep in mind that HST is not as barrel dependent as gold dot unless that has changed.

In my P365X I run 147gr standard pressure HST's as I know they perform well out of the 3.1 inch barrel with the small bonus of being subsonic. In my heavier full sized 9's like my Staccato I run 124gr +P HST's since the steel frames soak up the recoil. I like keeping recoil in my P365x down as well thus the standard pressure loading.

I use Underwood Extreme Defender for my pocket 9's.  Looked pretty good in the gel tests.  Light at 90 gr, 1475 fps.  Won't over-penetrate.  Low recoil.  Their .380 is the only round that doesn't bang up my trigger finger with my Seecamp.

I used to carry Winchester 147 gr Ranger T. It was very accurate for me. Then it became impossible to get because Winchester came down on dealers who were selling it to non-LEO's.

Miwall has them for around $28 a box of 50, which is a good price for that caliber defensive ammo IMO.

That's very confusing ammo. The box says RA9SXTC and T-series. It appears that it is overrun ammo from a contract with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

I hear a lot of speak about 147gr in a Glock 43... It is not uncommon for the pistol to have issues feeding 147gr ammo.  I had to use 124gr HST in my G43 as the slight OAL increase on the 147gr ammo caused it to have malfunctions feeding.  I have been able to reduplicate this issue on more than one G43 actually 5 in total.

OP Winchester Ranger, Speer Gold Dot, or Federal HST are all good loads I would be ok with any of those.  I would option for the standard pressure personally as the benefit of +P really is not a benefit as they tend to preform basically the same as standard pressure but with more recoil.  I would choose any of the 3 brands in 124gr standard pressure.

RA9SXT was the predecessor to RA9T. Most consider RA9T to be better. It's odd that both would be on the box. I've got some coming to see if my 1911 likes it.

Isn't the Winchester 127 grain Ranger a +P+ round? If so, I wouldn't shoot it in a G-43. I have a large amount of 127 grain +P+ and frankly the only thing it would do well against are naked humans. Clothed ones, not so much................

I standardized on Hornady XTP 147 grain. But mainly for the crimp, because I shoot it in a revolver (9mm converted 642-1). I do have some Federal 150 grain, but haven’t tried it. I rather 147 grain over 124 grain. Just from what I’ve seen, real world and info I’ve reviewed online.

Work also issues 147 grain. We are in the middle of a transition from Winchester Ranger to Speer G2. Winchester runs fine in our Glock 19s, but also in my AR9 pistol (6” barrel). Add in the heavier round is subsonic, even better with the suppressor.

Thanks, that's interesting, but it doesn't really get at my concern. I'm not worried about the % loss in velocity, I'm worried about the raw velocity being too low for expansion. Note that the 147s still have the lowest velocity.

But admittedly this is guesswork. I don't know what the expansion threshold is for HSTs. But I do know 124s with a short barrel will be comfortably above that line at any reasonable range, while I am not currently sure of that for 147s. I'd love to proven wrong though.

Edited to add: this post goes into some of the evidence that 147 grain HSTs out of short barrels might have trouble expanding under some circumstances: https://www.sigtalk.com/threads/p365-hst-124-147-or-150.338706/#post-4780340. They still expand, but it's maybe right on the edge, and if one or two things make conditions a little more unfavorable than typical my worry is that you might lose expansion altogether.

That post also takes a dump on the 150 grain micro HSTs, but we went over that in another thread :D

I have stock of Winchester Ranger 127gr JHP +P+ for self-defense purpose and is what I use in all my 9mm pistols but for my Sig P365 I found it to be a handful for double and triple taps.
I saw Federal 124gr "Punch" standard pressure ammo at local BassPro so I picked up 5 boxes (100 rounds).  I shot 20 rounds in the P365 and it's a lot easier than +P+ ammo.  I'll shoot 40 rounds more to make sure it works okay then load my P365 mags with them.
