Despite the terrible luck I've had with Ruger single action revolvers, I decided to pick up a Super Blackhawk stainless 5.5". Every screw fucked up? Yep. Terrible, uneven finish? Yep. Poor fitting grips? Yep. A ridge/burr on the right side of the cylinder window? Yep. Rough internals? Yep Front sight visibly clocked right when looking down the barrel? Yep. Is Ruger even capable of putting out a single action revolver that doesn't look like a bag of ass? Most of the issues are correctible. Ordered new screws. Took to the finish with Scotch Brite pads. Might order Chig's Grips. Filed down the ridge/burr. Smoothed up the internals. The worst issue, IMO, is the clocked front sight. Now I will admit, I didn't have to adjust the rear sight too terribly much, but it is definitely left of center. Is it even worth sending back to have corrected? I will say this: at least the cylinder throats are properly sized. So I got that going for me. Which is nice. |

Not just Ruger… sounds about the same as the 686 I bought last year, didn’t even make it through a full cylinder before it stopped working. Back to the factory it went. It’s better now, but… |

I’d send it back. I bought a 45 Colt/ACP convertible that new out of the box was shooting shotgun patterns at 30 feet. It had the miscut cylinders. Most of the 12 chambers were .4490 - .4500. It was a blued model and at the time I didn’t know but they had also installed a much shorter 44 magnum front sight. Another reason I was having such an awful time trying to get it sighted in. I called and talked to Rugers CS. I didn’t know about the front sight at the time. Boxed it up and sent it back with their shipping label. I got it back right at 2 weeks later with everything repaired. Pin gauged all the chambers .4525. Plus they apologized about the front sight and had replaced it with the taller 45 Colt sight. There’s no reason we the consumer should have to be dealing with stuff like this. Ruger and S&W should be putting out a quality product especially for the crazy prices they are asking now. I recently looked at a Smith 610 10mm revolver at my LGS. Brand new. I pulled the trigger 3 times and the gun locked up. The owner looked at it, we opened it up and it started working again. He tried and it locked up on him too. He said well another one to go back. ![]() If you don’t want to deal with Ruger, you could send it to Fermin Garza. He does excellent work on Rugers. |

Back to the factory it went. It's better now, but Funny thing is… I sold a 30+ year old Python to buy that 686+ no comparison between them, but the colt was blued and I really like stainless. Was thinking about getting a new stainless python, but a buddy of mine is a Smith fanboy and I’ve never had a S&W before, they went on sale at PSA so I had to get one ![]() |
| I recently got a used GP100 Match Champion, ( sight unseen off of Gunbroker), and when I go it I noticed the barrel was canted a bit to the left and the cylinder cuts were not even. I am surprised that for the price they want for these "higher end" guns, the quality control is not better. Sadly I had the same issue with a S&W revolver not long ago. Are they hiring blind people for their inspectors? |
Be the change you want in this world.
| I will say, it shoots quite accurately. I replaced all the screws (really, Ruger SA's should just come unassembled so their semi-trained monkeys don't fuck up every screw), added a HiViz front sight (now straight so Ruger either bent the sight or installed it crooked), sent off the grip frame for Chig's grips, shimmed the hammer and trigger. There is so much play in the trigger it has four shims and STILL has a lot of play. |
