Rock solid bike. Will eat as many miles as you want. Dependable and easy to maintain.
Good friend of mine has like 100K on one. I doubt he would ever part with it. |

I had a 1986 in 1988-89.
I was 19 and beat it to DEATH. Fun bike,weak clutch from factory. Took some interstate rides.Air cooled cooked in summer. Ran ay local drag strip,11.60's. Ended exploding the trans locking up real wheel at 65mph racing a ZX7R and a Vmax... Sold it broke, bought a ZX10. Fj1200 was fun bike. Attached File Attached File Attached File Attached File |

I had an 89 FJ1200, I beat on it hard on the track and chucked the transmission. Rebuilt it and sold it, moved over to the Suzuki GSXR1100 master race!

Buddy of mine had a hopped up early eighties FJ600 with Dunlops, Kerker exhaust and all the other go fast parts and when we went and test drove the 1200 he said 'fuck that shit'. Stuck with his 600.

I had an 89 also, loved it except some previous owner had painted it purple. Hard finding parts for the early fairings, they weakest them almost every year.

I worked in a Yamaha shop in that era. Decent bike for sport touring, but we did a lot of 2nd gear replacement in them. Yamaha even a kit for the job. Problem was even the new gear set had shitty engagement and if it wasn’t shimmed correctly it would just eat itself like the first set.
Check 2nd gear. |

Good solid bikes! A bit more up right seating than the FZR bikes so you can spend all day in the saddle comfortably.
God awesome torque that can very easily get you in trouble. * Actually enough to get me out of the trouble l caused. |

Having said that, 2nd/4th gear set replacement is pretty simple. Air cooled bike, pull the clutch, pipes and carbs, drop the engine, it comes out the right side after you take the frame piece off, flip it over and pull the bottom case half. We were a big Yamaha dealer in Toronto and we did a lot of them. A lot. We even made a jig thingy for sliding the engine in and out the side. |

An 86? If it has original brake lines I'd swap those out for braided steel. Probably needs maintenance on the front forks and new springs and a rear shock. Edit course I haven't worked on a motorcycle in probably 20 years

Love the FJ1200, one of my all time favorite bikes. There were some very cool bikes in the '80's, and the FJ was and still is a beautiful bike. If I were going to buy something like that now, I think I'd go for a V65 Sabre with the upper fairing, but I'd never not consider a FJ! As soon as I get to a place where I can keep more than one bike, I'm totally going to get my '80's on!

Waiting on a new back tire for it right now. Lots of tread on the current one but it has cracks in the sidewall. |

What I remember of it was some very strong midrange, and handling like a Garbage Truck over some nasty pavement. I think you'll find that one of those bikes will still be a nice place to spend a day-just remember what they say about meeting your heroes. |

It was much smaller, sported an aluminum frame, five valves per cylinder, water cooled, huge brakes, it was miles ahead of the FJ. I still have mine that I bought new in 87. I had a 95 dark blue , it’s a great feeling to pass trucks and go up steep hills without down shifting.
I hated taking the carbs off, but I hated taking the carbs off of my Fz1 also. I had the Fj on a dyno almost stock 120 hp and 80 ft lbs |
