You know what a scuttlebutt is.
You've tasted diesel fuel or oil when you drank from the scuttlebutt.
You know what a P-Way is.
You've stood watch in 120+ degree heat, just to watch a dial on a gage.
You know what a berthing is.
You've played video games in the berthing.
You've heard rapid ringing bells, immediately sucked yourself up against the wall while people in ninja masks ran by you.
You've had chicken cordon blue
You hate chicken cordon blue, because you had chicken cordon blue in the Navy.
There have been dead bodies stored in the freezer where your food is stored. They didn't move the food.
You've gotten stitches on your face, forehead or eyebrow just from sitting up to fast from your bed.
You know what a working party is.
You've been assigned to a working party.
You've realized it isn't a party at all.
You've hung out with welders just so you can smoke cigarettes inside the ship and use the exhaust vents to suck your smoke out of the ship.
You know what an MR is.
You've traded stuff to an MR to get some stupid plaque engraved for someone you don't like.
You've looked at Marines in envy, wishing you could play with their cool guns and stuff. Then, wondered if they envy you because you get to stay on the ship and eat hot food.
You've come to love and hate Marines at the same time.
You've come to love Marines because they are B/A dudes and fight like animals.
You've come to hate Marines because they always hog up the on board Gym, make the chow lines ridiculously long, eat all the food, plug all the toilets and clog up the P-Ways.
You know what the difference is between a Wog and a Shellback.
You've gone through a ridiculous hazing "ceremony" just to be called a Shellback.
You've then hazed your younger friends on the next deployment as a Shellback and had a great time spraying kids with a firehose.
You've studied your tail off to do great on an advancement exam, score high and still don't make rank because your rate is locked out.
You take the next advancement exam hung over, maybe still a little drunk. You didn't study at all and still make rank because enough people in your rate got out of the Navy and opened up your rate.
You've gotten to this point of the post, have laughed a little. Maybe cried a little and still keep in touch with your buddies because it was a good time and a great experience.
Then, you remember how much it actually sucked and decide your happy being a veteran and not on active duty anymore.
Cheers fellas. Have a good one. Veterans day is coming up. Thank a Veteran for their service, even though you served too. It's classy. Stay classy San Diego.
