It seems like everytime I see a Sprinter van it looks like it's riddled with rusted bullet holes. Doesn't matter if it's 5 years or 15 years. Do they use some shitty ass steel?

Up until 2007, they had shitty paint or something.  After that, they are much better.

Because you live in salt land.

This. The newer models are better made/built.

1) They're older than you think.

2) You live in the salt belt.

3) The working dudes that drive those things don't care about washing salt off.

I saw one Friday that the entire vehicle was rust color only it wasn't paint. Like the OP I sat there trying to figure out how that was possible.

It’s the old Daimler Chrysler years sprinters that had terrible rustproofing. They all rusted to shit.
So basically, because Dodge.

Mercedes skipped a primer step, with bad results. You see some of the cars from that era doing the same.

I just meant a normal sprinter. I would love a sprinter based RV but that’s way out of my price range.

The actual Dodge brand Sprinter vans rusted out primarily due to shitting manufacturing.

A lot of other tall roof vans you see with premature rust are due to not being able to run these things through normal car washes.  They are too tall to fit in any traditional car wash, so you either have to wash them by hand, or take them to a semi-truck washplace like Blue Beacon.

Some enterprising person opened up an oversized carwash here. Always packed with Sprinters, work trucks, RVs, and brodozers

4) Incredibly poor quality paint, applied exceptionally thinly, over not very good steel.

They were rusting at a couple years old when contemporary Ford,Chevrolet and Nissan vans subjected to the same use were fine. The first and second models were utter shit in regards to any corrosion resistance.

The Left Coast does have at least two redeeming qualities:  Lack of rust & Lane Sharing

Ones that live near the beach do, but from the roof down rather then the rockers up like they do in the rust belt.

My old toyota pickup wound up with rust holes in the bed and A pillars after I lived near the beach for a few years. Wife's car has rust holes in the roof too but at over 50 years old (the car, not her) that isn't surprising.

I'm guessing you live in a non rust-belt state?

A buddy is fighting with GM customer service. His 2016 Silverado has major rocker rot already. The steel-bodied F-150s aren't faring much better.
