If we're talking about mass produced, Meijer generic (8 or 9). Seriously. Oddly enough, Kroger generic is the worst (1).
If anything goes, then Boylan Natural (10). I did a fairly comprehensive taste test test years ago. Interesting trivia. It's technically illegal to use sassafras root bark anymore because there was a study out there linking it to cancer or something. IIRC it's far less dangerous than cigarettes but then again nobody was there to complain when they banned it. That being said, I think some manufacturers still use it anyway. |

I like Boylan, they also make a great birch beer too.
Eta their cream soda is fantastic too. |

Yeah... I'm gonna have to disagree with you on this one. My vote goes for Barq's in a glass bottle. Add a fried shrimp po'boy, a few pounds of truly spicy boiled crawfish, and maybe a smoked mullet, and I am in Heaven.

Quoted: Unfortunately no Meijers here. I'll have to look for Boylan. View Quote Boylan regular is okay. But the natural is key. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000A6DKKG I have no idea where to find it in stock or if they even make it anymore |

Sprechers.
Then A&W from the restaurant, not cans/bottles from the store. Grays (bottled here so some bias) IBC |

None of the above. The best so far is Jackson Hole Sarsaparilla Soda. Nothing so far is even close.

Frostop is pretty good as far as distributed commercial root beers are concerned.

I don’t know if it’s still around, but Henry Weinhards made a great root beer in their day.

Co-worker told me to try Fitz's. It's cane sugar and quite good. Good luck finding it. Rural King had it near me.

Virgil’s
A&W is my go to for when I can’t find the good stuff. |

Not root-beer but sassafras tea is an old remedy, supposedly someone decided to use it to make root-beer at some point with it. It is or was a medicinal thing, but seems the fda banned it, but kinda odd the natives and the settlers used it and didn't get cancer. Shit is hard to dig up, as the tap root goes deep and tough. Used a truck to pull it out the ground.

My nephew makes a killer non-alcoholic root Beer at his brewery.
A&W Diet Root Beer was the bomb! Then they pulled a Coke and make Sugar Free that tastes like shit. |

Friend of mine in high school, his father brewed root beer 15 proof.
Super fizzy, strong taste. You wouldn't want to get drunk on it, but a glass now and then was awesome. |
