I'm not talking about the "stars."

I'm talking about all those delightful characters in the supporting casts of all the great old western movies and TV shows.

For me, none holds a candle to the late, great, Mr. Willam "Jack" Elam (1920 - 2003), a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Elam's misaligned left eye (he was blind in it) was the result of being stabbed in the eye with a pencil after a fight with a fellow Boy Scout when he was kid.

Although it cost him his sight in one eye, it certainly didn't hurt his career as a "character."

RIP, Mr. Elam.  Thanks for all the great roles you played.

I also loved Dan Blocker ("Hoss Cartwright").  I guess he's my first runner up.

Hank Worden.

Played in a bunch of John Wayne westerns, always looked old.

He was Mose Harper in the Searchers, preacher in the Alamo, plus numerous other roles.

Ben Foster played a good Charley Prince in 3:10 to Yuma.  Too bad he has not been in more westerns.

I don't think they came any better in the supporting actor role.

I do. I see him a lot on The Rifleman.  I think he's on some of Gunsmoke episodes too.  His part of Abraham Lincoln on The Rifleman is spot on.

Dan Blocker was the star of one of my dad's favorite westerns, "Something for a lonely man"  no gunfights but an awesome western... more just set in the old west, not a western really...
Jack Elam was awesome too!!!

Rest in peace,  Dad...
