What type of US Navy ship would you have wanted to serve on during WWII if you were able to choose?

Essex Class. The true hammer that broke the back of the IJN, and great survivability.
Battleship after Pearl Harbor. About the highest rate of survival, I’d guess.

I would love to have worked on a Fletcher.
Maybe as a junior officer or Exec. I don’t know if I’m captain martial. |

A Destroyer. They were always in the middle of the shit. I wouldn’t be bored
USS Colorado, the battleship named for the state where I was born. I believe at the time this was encouraged by the Navy, letting enlisted to pick to serve on their states namesake battleship.

USSi Inaugural... a mine sweeper... could have hung out with my grandpa
The USS Massachusetts suffered no combat fatalities during WW2 so I'd know I had an excellent chance of surviving the war.

Carrier. Multiple acres of sovereign U.S. territory.
No idea what I'd do other than maybe be a cook. |

I remember Great grandpa had an old faded tattoo of an anchor. Asked him one time what he did in the navy. He said no I was in the Merchant Marines, I would set on a gun sometimes a 3” gun sometimes a 1” gun watching and listening, and sometimes you’d hear a buzz kinda like a mosquito then we’d shoot down japs.

USS Barb
Not too many Yanks got to go to the island of Japan prior to the A-Bomb and got back off alive. |

Lots of folks beat me to the Ice Cream barge, so I guess i'm going with PT boat. Preferably one they mounted the 37mm cannon from a fighter on.
Gimmie a Dreadnought like the USS Texas, not a Cruiser like the Houston or Astoria.

Drachinifel is banned in this thread, although that navy rum ice cream float looked pretty good. No ice cream barges!

I was in the Navy. Have never set foot on a ship, even a cruise ship.
That worked for me. I guess I'll stick with that. |

Quoted: That's like a choice of shit sandwiches View Quote Yeah, after touring the USS Alabama and USS Drum I came to the conclusion that was a job I was not up to. The submarine Drum was really claustrophobic to the point where I’ve had dreams about it. The battleship Alabama wasn’t quite as tight. But it was still exhausting getting to end to end. Everything is solid metal and it was hot. Bear in mind these are museum ships with air conditioning and various accommodations for tourists. Not warships underway in enemy waters. |
