Usually shavings under a criss cross pattern

Quick start and some logs; less smoke

Top down if I have the time

Or

I build a Lincoln log type square structure with kindling and throw newspaper in the middle until it’s caught.

Like a man, with fat lighter. Place smaller split pieces in the rack with fat lighter pieces going underneath. Then as that catches, add bigger pieces.

I put some pellets in the hopper then push the button to start the stove. It does the rest.

3 or 4 pieces of  matchlite charcoal, dry wood of various sizes, and a propane torch as a positive source of ignition.

I lived in a wood heated home for a few years.  It became second nature.

Old bills/paper at the bottom of a loose stack of graduated kindling.  I tended toward a Lincoln log shape. Light it and close the stove door to a crack.  Main thing is to start an air/heat draw in a gradual way so that you have a draft from the stove up the pipe/flue.  Gradually add larger pieces.  I stacked them in reverse so everything was handy.

When I was splitting wood I would just take the last piece and resplit it a few times.  Then take one of those pieces and resplit that.  Then carve off a few shavings with the axe.  Bundle it all in the wood carrier and bring it in.  I kept unsplit wood by the door and would feed that once the fire was going well.

With the new house I turn this new-fangled dial on the wall.  Huge improvement.

It’s funny, but I’ve never seen it mentioned in any outdoors, camping, survival, etc books.

Form a tipi against the back wall with newspaper, cardboard, kindling and then logs.  Light, walk away.

I basically do that same thing.  Usually just light off some newspaper to get a little draft going up the chimney, but an open window also helps quite a bit.  Never tried the upside down fire, but even outdoors I build a cross hatch pattern of kindling much like the video does.

Depends on how much time I've got. Usually it's twisted up newspaper and kindling but if I need it right away or I'm busy then I just throw a fire starter log in there, surround it with real logs, light it and walk away.

But the kicker for me is that I have two fireplaces. One on main floor and one beneath it in the basement. So I have to run a kerosene heater in the fireplace in the basement if there won't be anyone down there that wants a real fire. I do this because I have to keep a column of rising air in that chimney too. If I don't, some of the smoke from the upstairs fireplace will go back down the cold chimney and stink out the basement with smoke.

Oh, and I always, always prime the flu with burning paper.

Top down in Keith J’s memory. It works.

Buy a crooked ass red cedar 4x4 for dirt cheap and split that for kindling. Lights with a match and a hand full will get arm thickness oak burning no problem.

I can't believe men need tips for how to start a fire...
Is this how emasculated men have become????
