Truman Show. First date back in 1998 with my now wife. We watched the movie for about a half hour. Thought it sucked so we left the theater to make out in my car. Ended up watching it some time later and it was pretty good!

One of my absolute favorites. When it ends I feel like I was in the Royal Navy for 2 hours. Wish they had made more.

It helps if you name the movie

(I assume you’re referring to the masterpiece known as Master & Commander)

considering the shining movie and book were very different in many respects, they had to marry the two and the follow up writing into a new movie...it is frankly outstanding

The original (80s) Fright Night was a pleasant surprise for me.  I expected a comically bad B-movie, but it's pretty damn good.

Took my kids, planned on napping through the movie but ended up being impressed by it.

That was excellent.

Also along those same lines:  Trolls.
Had to take the kids to see it with some of their little friends - spouse unit was at a doctors appointment that was running late but was going to come to the theater to chaperone the kids so I could go to work.  I thought it would suck, but 15 minutes in I was like “Yeah, honey don’t worry about coming to the theater, I’ll stay here with the kids...”

The Foreigner

Saw it expecting to be a slightly more serious but typical Jackie Chan flick.

It turned out to be an excellent film, great story, great casting, and great set pieces all around.

Raiders of the Lost Ark

I had gone to see a movie at the theater and after it was over they announced there would be a special preview showing of a film for free.
I heard the title and didn't expect much, but what the hell, it was free.

I am truly surprised that no one yet mentioned 1981's THE THING...    Thinking the director from Halloween doing Sci-Fi..   Nah...   Totally changed sci-fi films..Figured it was the top film until Terminator.

People mentioned Matrix, by those former brothers..   But I think BOUND by the same brothers was a good caper flick..  Plus a great lesbian scene.

DREDD was previously mentioned..  Came out after school started, so it wasn't a popular film.   September is where films die and all.

Too many unanswered questions, or a big enough question left unanswered can leave me very dissatisfied with a film.  That was not the case with this movie, but has been with others.

"Dog Soldiers".  It surprised me, too.

Other movies I wasn't expecting to be as good as they were:

The Descent (too intense to be enjoyable, but it was really good)
As Above, So Below
Knives Out
Murder on the Orient Express (the new one with Kenneth Branaugh)
Pitch Black
Star Trek (the first JJ Abrams movie)

original or reboot? Because I saw the reboot and I was surprised, it was actually pretty good!  Very different feel from teh original, which in many ways was a satire on US society of the 80s.

This one. Looked like a lame, remake of a Hollywood noir type of movie. It was, for the first half. Then halfway through it took an unexpected turn and got to be pretty good.

Blade Runner 2049. I went in expecting to be disappointed, to see a film from a director I wasn't impressed with (Arrival was meh), that couldn't live up to the original.

By the end of the first scene my mind was changed, and all of my fears were gone.

This.  It was a well done flick.

And I agree with the OP about Ford vs Ferrari.  That was a damn good movie.
