Truman Show. First date back in 1998 with my now wife. We watched the movie for about a half hour. Thought it sucked so we left the theater to make out in my car. Ended up watching it some time later and it was pretty good!

The original (80s) Fright Night was a pleasant surprise for me. I expected a comically bad B-movie, but it's pretty damn good.

Quoted: Spiderman Into The Spiderverse. Took my kids, planned on napping through the movie but ended up being impressed by it. View Quote That was excellent. Also along those same lines: Trolls. Had to take the kids to see it with some of their little friends - spouse unit was at a doctors appointment that was running late but was going to come to the theater to chaperone the kids so I could go to work. I thought it would suck, but 15 minutes in I was like “Yeah, honey don’t worry about coming to the theater, I’ll stay here with the kids...” |

The Foreigner
Saw it expecting to be a slightly more serious but typical Jackie Chan flick. It turned out to be an excellent film, great story, great casting, and great set pieces all around. |

Raiders of the Lost Ark
I had gone to see a movie at the theater and after it was over they announced there would be a special preview showing of a film for free. I heard the title and didn't expect much, but what the hell, it was free. |

Mr Brooks.
Still one of my favorites. ETA: Plus, |
|
The Last Samurai.
Saw the poster - "Tom fucking Cruise is 'the last samurai'? What has become of the world?" Years later I saw the movie...its now my favorite movie. |
|
The World War One documentary They Shall Not Grow Old
Regular movies don't surprise me, and I'm usually disappointed by them |

I am truly surprised that no one yet mentioned 1981's THE THING... Thinking the director from Halloween doing Sci-Fi.. Nah... Totally changed sci-fi films..Figured it was the top film until Terminator.
People mentioned Matrix, by those former brothers.. But I think BOUND by the same brothers was a good caper flick.. Plus a great lesbian scene. DREDD was previously mentioned.. Came out after school started, so it wasn't a popular film. September is where films die and all. |

Iron Man.
Come, on...the previous marvel movies sucked... It was Robert Downey Peter puffer crackhead Jr... Yep...very low expectations.. |
|
I thought Chronicles of Riddick was going to be another boring B scifi movie. It's still one of my favorites. Necromongers are one of the best villains ever conceived.

Based on this recommendation, my wife and I just watched it. Fantastic movie. It is great because it leaves the viewer with so many unanswered questions. Click To View Spoiler Was Alejandro really working for the competition?
Why did Guillermo and Silvio both call him Medellin? Was Silvio part of the plan, was he supposed to be there as Alejandro’s ride to follow Manuel Diaz? The movie begins with half-truths and deceits. How many other half-truths and misdirections were we told throughout? |

That was not the case with this movie, but has been with others. |

Two Tom Cruise movies:
Edge of Tomorrow & Oblivion. Thought they would be meh, but ended up really liking both. |

I thought it would be a run-of-the-mill gangster movie, but it had some genuine surprises. |

Other movies I wasn't expecting to be as good as they were: The Descent (too intense to be enjoyable, but it was really good) As Above, So Below Knives Out Murder on the Orient Express (the new one with Kenneth Branaugh) Pitch Black Star Trek (the first JJ Abrams movie) |

JoJo Rabbit
Pitch Black. Well, maybe not blown away, but at the time I thought is was a very fun movie. |

Forest Gump, went to the theaters for another movie that night and it was sold out, the only one available was Forest Gump.
Me and my date were floored by it. Watched it again with her the next weekend. |

Quoted: Blade Runner 2049. I went in expecting to be disappointed, to see a film from a director I wasn't impressed with (Arrival was meh), that couldn't live up to the original. By the end of the first scene my mind was changed, and all of my fears were gone. View Quote This. It was a well done flick. And I agree with the OP about Ford vs Ferrari. That was a damn good movie. I was nowhere near blown away, but I went into The Hunt expecting to eventually shut it off, but I ended up enjoying it. |
|
The Matrix
The Kingdom Expected both to be cheesy and they weren't at all. |
|
The Man from Earth
Pontypool Two of the very few movies I'll watch more than a few times purposely. |
