I always hated having to lanyard my weapons while in the Army, but I do use one on my 10mm Witness when camping in bear country.
I sleep in a hammock and have the pistol in my hand on my chest all night long. I have a lanyard on it and tied to my right hand. If I get jumped while sleeping, I won’t lose the pistol. I have heard black bears on the edge of camp before, been visited by skunks and coon, but nothing has gotten close enough to cause me too much worry. What do you think about the usefulness of pistol lanyards? |
|
Never lost my pistol roping out of a helicopter or climbing up the side of a boat, so that's pretty alright.
Had a pistol bonk me on the helmet on the way up a ladder from the guy ahead of me so that was pretty not alright. Spent the rest of the afternoon swimming for it. I think they're great if it's the ID card retractable style, I hate the phone cord ones. |

Was required for some maritime ops I did. Could be useful on dry land, but awareness and a good holster go a long way. Notably few pistols have a lanyard attachment point.

I use one when hiking and fishing when using an an open top holster.

I use one while on the water. I don't particularity like them, but I like losing a gun even less.
ETA- I usually carry a 642 when I'm around water (since I can load the first chamber with snake shot) and I've been using one of these retractable things with it: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0088MQAU6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I wouldn't use it with a heavier gun, but it hooks to my pfd and works fine for the lightweight gun while keeping the lanyard out of the way. They make several sizes and styles and I've used their smaller zinger style with some fishing gear too- no affiliation except the product has worked well enough for my uses. Side note- if you use a Hogue monogrip on a revolver, Hogue does occasional runs of lanyard studs in blued and stainless that replace the mounting screw on the bottom of the grip. You have to call them and ask though as you almost never see them listed and they don't always have them available. On pistols, make sure that whatever you're using and however you have it set up doesn't interfere with reloading. |

View Quote Yes, that does suck. I use paracord around the grip. I did find a 1911A1 Mainspring Housing with a lanyard loop at a gun show and bought it, but never installed it. |

Black bears are dangerous? Polar Bears will hunt humans. Brown and Black Bears not so much.
Had many encounters with black bear, not once felt I needed a firearm for them. Many times right at the back door even. It’s the 2 legged night prowlers, why I carry. If you’ve got a habit of forgetting where you placed your handgun when out in the woods then use a lanyard. Big Army’s Joe is stupid and will leave sensitive material behind. That’s why lanyards were used. When over water seems pretty logical. |
|
I like a Hirt one for what the OP said, and the Gemtech ones are nice if you're in the water.
|
|
I don't use them. A good holster will retain your pistol sufficiently.

Had them in the army. Guess how many things it catches on inside a tank turret?

Never used one and don't plan on it. Never really thought about them. They seem handy if the situation calls for it.

I wish someone would come up with a Glock hole plug with a loop. It'd be nice to have a lanyard while in my kayak.

On the water, yes. Otherwise no.
Slight derail: Just prior to deploying in '07 our ship got brand new MK18s for the VBSS guys. When climbing back aboard from their very first boarding one of them dropped his in the ocean while climbing the boarding ladder. I was watching and my heart sank right along with that little rifle. |

It’s a tool. Don’t use it often- but when I do I’m glad for it.
I use mine when around water, or if I’m walking some place unfamiliar. Example- when I first shot at a friends house under nods and had my can attached to my M&P. Did not want to loose it and spend all night searching in field grass. That’s a nuanced view, I’m sure you won’t find that repeated much in Arfcom. |
|
Army made me have one on my 1911, never lost it, but I never lost my M16 or Mortar tube either.
I suppose they have their place, but a good holster solves most of the issues. |

If you love something set it free
If you really love it , tie it up, and it will never leave. |

I hated them. The only time my pistol left the holster unintentionally was when the lanyard snagged my n something. I quit using one on my second deployment and nobody said a thing.

My part of that collective thinks they are retarded, unless it's like a bungee to a belt and not something around your wrist which is a lanyard with like rawhide and stuff.
