Reminds me when I went to Denver and everyone said I'd enjoy the views. It was so foggy the entire time that I couldn't even see the ground from my second floor hotel room.

That's the sweetest spot IMO. Have stayed in Yachats twice a couple years apart.

Stayed in Coos Bay last time, which is ho hum but access to the Dunes and a run down to the Cali Redwoods.

The southern stretch down into California is pretty beautiful, too.

Yeah, it's nice that both of them are just a couple of hours away and not as touristy as the bigger towns.  You're right about that southern stretch too.

Works for me. If it were not for guns and ammo I wouldn't have bothered going west. I wouldn't mind moving a little further east either. Further away from the coast the better. Further away from cities and people the better.

I'm gonna be very agreeable as an old fart if I ever make it to that age....

It’s probably a matter of perspective. Familiarity breeds contempt and all that.

Coos Bay is okay. You can go go just north out of town and rent side by sides for some pretty epic riding on the dunes and along the coast.

If the weather is nice and you like scenery, definitely head out to Sunset Bay State Park and check out the Cape Arago lighthouse from the viewing point.

@wrightP - as a visitor, I agree with what he said, more hillbilly than hippie.  We went there for location and found three really fun things to do each day:

a) Run down to the Redwoods, Jedediah Smith state forest past Crescent City CA.  The "Stout Memorial Grove" is epic and easy access. + beautiful drive.  Amazing.  All-day side trip, but amazing if you have never been or especially have kids w/you.
b) Day at the dunes. Even got my car stuck for memories.
c) Rented a boat and spent a day on Tenmile Lake a little north of town.  fun.

In Coos Bay itself, there is a fantastic Pizza Place, Dave's.  It is very noteworthy.  They had a tragic fire a few years ago and new location is out of the way (behind a Motel 6 north of town), but the food is impressive by any standards.

I am not an expert on the area but we had a lot of fun, me and two teen-age step-kids.

Right now I'm scouting a place to take the kids for a few days end of the month, boy things are booked and pricey!  I'm thinking Olympic Peninsula this time (close to hand), and maybe I can tow my own small boat for some amusement.  The trip to Coos bay and Tenmile lake made me buy a small, inexpensive, older 19' cuddy cabin to get out on the water once in a while.

It is common for fog in the breeze during the summer at the Oregon beach. The cool moist air off the ocean compresses when it hits land causing fog. As it pushes inland it heats and the fog goes away.

Some of the best days on the Oregon coast are not during the summer months but it is hit or miss with the rain.

This.

And quit buying unspoiled ground.

Washington is much better for you. Just buy fuel and keep going. You can buy crispitos when buying fuel so you’re gtg.

Coastal fishing sucks, hunting too. Fog everywhere, it’s not for you. It’s a nightmare really.

Sharks are everywhere, methbillies too. They will steal your jeep rims while you’re 50 ft away taking pictures of rocks. Lot of really impressive rocks in Washington.

Antifa will swarm your RV if you stop at any red light.

For your safety. You’re welcome.

If you want to drive a little north of Florence, you could go to the Sea Lion cave. I think it’s the largest Sea Lion cave in the world? Also north of Florence is the Heceta Head Lighthouse, which is the most photographed lighthouse on the west coast.

Very cool.  They're loud ain't they? lol  If you make it to Newport your kids might enjoy seeing the Hatfield Marine Science Center (It's where the "Free Willy" Orca used to live).  They have a pretty cool exhibit where you can walk through tubes in the tank and have sharks and other sea critters swimming above and below you (Kind'a cool).  Also, you could hit the "Old Bay Front" there in Newport and see sea lions a lot closer up as they beg for food from the active fisheries there.  You could also (On the old bay front) go to the "Ripley's Believe It Or Not" exhibit (Total rip-off but still kind'a fun) and "The Undersea Gardens" (This one is pretty hit or miss depending on what the water is like that day).  If there's a lot of silt in the water you can't see crap but, once in awhile it's clear enough to justify the cost of admission.  You might enjoy taking an hour to visit "Pirate's Plunder" too.  It's a pirate themed antique mall.  LOTS of stuff for kids of all ages.

Also, as long as you're there you "HAVE" to eat at "Mo's".  It's a seafood place that's been there for 80+ years and has some really good clam chowder and fish and chips.
Hope you all enjoy your visit.

You’re the first person that lives on the coast that I’ve ever heard recommend Mo’s.

Used to live near thr beach...now I live inland a bit. A family favorite was always Lincoln City, Tillamook, and Depoe Bay. Great places to visit and remember my time as a kid.

In Seattle, they say that if you can see Mt. Rainier, it's going to rain today.  If you can't see Mt. Rainier, it's already raining.

Had a Missouri kid out there last week. Beautiful, powerful place! Went out there to climb St Helens, boxed checked!

Nice. Looks like the weather cleared up a good bit during your visit. It can be so hit and miss. While this year the weather was a bit on the miss side for us, last year it was a solid hit.

Yes it did. We drove down to Brookings yesterday and it was pretty miss the whole way. We were able to hike into a “secrete beach” and the kids had a blast.
