Sometime during the clear weekend of Oct. 23-24, a group of five to six men broke into the Brink's Inc. armored car headquarters at Lodi Street and Lemoyne Avenue. They blew a hole through a wall of a vault and stole $430,000 in cash and checks.
At the time, it was one of the largest-ever armored car heists.
It was the weapon used that made the burglary extraordinary, as well as the key piece of evidence to bring Singer to justice.
Investigators believed the burglars had broken into the building before, to learn the layout of every room, and how to maneuver around any alarms.
After jimmying the door, the gang opened the garage door and drove their DeSoto Station wagon into the building.
They set up a 20mm 1939 Russian-Finnish War anti-tank gun behind some old mattresses and blankets and secured a homemade silencer to the barrel.
The burglars fired 31 shots in a ring to create a 24 x 18 inch hole through the foot-thick cement and steel bar reinforced wall of the vault. Then used carbon-coated saws to cut the rest of their way in. The hole was just large enough for a small man to wiggle his way in.
