Anyone in US House District 11 - there is a get together tonight for Arthur Purvis who will be facing off against Walkinshaw in November. I'll be there - make it if you can! To All, Kick Off for Arthur Purves Campaign against Walkinshaw: 13 Aug, 7-8:30PM 8942 Burke Lake Road, Springfield/22151 (Kings Park Community Center) They would like an RSVP (strong possibility of dessert) - [email protected] There is info on the November Election below. Turnout for Aug primary was really low; can't have that in Nov. There are going to be three Amendments to vote on. The US Senate race - BERT MIZUSAWA (R) vs. incumbent Mark Warner (D) The VA 11 Congressional District race - ARTHUS PURVES (R) vs. incumbent James Walkinshaw (D) |

Every time I see Mark Warner's name, I hear Jamie Farr saying to Harry Morgan... "I'm Section 8 from head to toe. I wear Mark Warner's bra..." I should feed that M*A*S*H scene to an "AI" editor and have it change the words for me. Then upload it to YouTube. |

CULPEPER, Va. — Republicans believe Virginia’s 7th Congressional District is their best chance to flip a seat in the state due to a vulnerable Democratic incumbent, lingering anger over a redistricting fight, and dissatisfaction with Democratic leadership in Richmond. But Republicans face major obstacles of their own: President Donald Trump’s unpopularity and the historical midterm disadvantage facing the president’s party. Doug Ollivant, a retired Army lieutenant colonel and combat veteran, won the GOP nomination on Aug. 4 and will face Rep. Eugene Vindman (D-VA) on Nov. 3. Vindman narrowly won the district with 51% in 2024. “Certainly, if Republicans are going to take one seat now held by a Democrat in Virginia, the 7th [District] is the most likely scenario,” political analyst Stephen Farnsworth told Washington Examiner. The National Republican Congressional Committee is also targeting the district. Reilly Richardson, the NRCC’s southern regional press secretary, said Republicans intend to make the race a priority. But what Republicans see as an opening, Democrats will see as an uphill battle. |

Stay Order Issued in Virginia’s Assault Weapons Ban Case Decision aligns Virginia courts and strengthens unified approach to defending the Commonwealth’s gun-safety law RICHMOND, Va. - Today, a Lancaster County Court judge joined three other state courts and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia in granting a stay in John Crump, et al. v. Jeffrey S. Katz, a challenge to Virginia’s assault weapons ban and large capacity magazine restrictions. Attorney General Jay Jones issued the following statement: “My office has fought for the uniform and fair application of the law, and today’s decision delivers exactly that. With the United States Supreme Court now reviewing major challenges to assault weapons bans, this stay ensures Virginia’s cases move forward on solid, consistent footing. Virginia’s constitutional assault weapons ban is an evidence-based response to addressing the epidemic of gun violence and to protect families, law enforcement, and communities. By aligning these cases under a single legal path while the nation awaits the Supreme Court’s ruling, we’re building a clear and consistent process, and we remain confident that this lifesaving measure will ultimately be upheld. Gun violence continues to drive violent crime in Virginia and across the nation, and assault weapons are designed to inflict maximum harm in seconds. The law enacted by the General Assembly and signed by the Governor will save lives, and it stands firmly within the bounds of the Constitution of Virginia. My office will keep pushing forward, doing everything we can to defend Virginia’s gun laws and keep our communities safe.” Published on: August 21, 2026 |

Helmer gets roasted on Reddit. https://www.reddit.com/r/Virginia/comments/1w034jk/im_dan_helmer_member_of_the_virginia_house_of/ Reddit Ask me anything I'm Dan Helmer, member of the Virginia House of Delegates, Chair of the Committee on Counties, Cities, and Towns, and House Democratic Caucus Campaigns Chair - AMA! AMA I will be hosting this AMA on Monday, August 31st from 4-6pm Eastern, but I wanted to post in advance so people can get their questions in. I am a West Point graduate, Iraq and Afghanistan veteran, Rhodes Scholar, small business leader, husband, and father. I am the son and grandson of immigrants. My grandparents came to this country as Holocaust survivors and refugees. In America, they were welcomed and found prosperity, freedom, and peace. I believe the American Dream belongs to all of us — no matter your race, religion, where you were born, or who you love. To defend the country that had done so much for my family, I joined the Army and attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. I served in Afghanistan, Iraq, South Korea, and finally here in Virginia, remaining in the U.S. Army Reserve until 2024. Now in my fourth term, I am proud to have led efforts as the House Democratic Caucus Campaigns Chair to build a progressive majority in the General Assembly — the most diverse body of representatives in its history. Together, we are working to protect our democracy from Trump and the MAGA agenda. That's why I passed the long-awaited bill to ban assault weapons, protecting our communities and our loved ones. To ensure thousands of Virginia families have access to food, I authored and passed the largest expansion of SNAP benefits in state history. And because the president and his allies have spent far too long twisting the truth about January 6th, I passed a law requiring our schools to teach students what really happened that day — and introduced another ensuring the attack's perpetrators can never hold office in Virginia. I believe government should work for the people. That's why I show up every day to protect what I believe in: access to safe and legal abortion, LGBTQ+ rights, voting rights, and our commonwealth's ability to stand up to any threat from this administration. Ask me anything — I'll be here answering your questions on Monday. |

Dear Dan, You said you fought terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan using "weapons of war", and that such weapons do not belong in the hands of us civilians (having equated us to terrorists if we have them.) Well Dan, you did not fight terrorists. You fought other governments. And I need the same effective weapons you used to fight a government too. Mine. YOU. |

https://richmond.com/news/state-regional/government-politics/article_9913a741-8b3e-49f1-8b3c-4540ee2e2616.html Attorney General Jay Jones announced Tuesday he has created a new unit within his office: the Firearms Accountability & Industry Responsibility Unit. The unit will investigate and bring civil enforcement actions against firearm industry members who violate a new law passed this year that requires them to implement business practices aimed at preventing giving a gun to a firearm trafficker, someone who is at risk of using a gun to harm someone, or a “straw purchaser” — someone who legally buys a gun to give it to someone who is prohibited from owning a gun. The new law, signed by Gov. Abigail Spanberger in April, authorizes the Office of the Attorney General to investigate firearm industry members suspected of breaking the rules. It also prohibits firearm industry members from knowingly contributing to a public nuisance through unlawful or unreasonable sales, manufacturing, importing or marketing practices. The attorney general can sue businesses over improper sales, distribution or marketing, as well as practices that make it easier for firearms to be obtained or diverted illegally. Jay Jones Attorney General Jay Jones has created a new unit to enforce a new firearm industry law passed this year. “Public safety can’t be pushed to the side or saved for another day — the cost is too high, which is why our office has created this path for Virginia to comprehensively seek justice for families who have been impacted by gun violence,” said Jones in a statement Tuesday. “While the law continues to hold perpetrators of violence accountable, the FAIR Unit allows our office the opportunity to hold those who are negligently contributing to the illicit flow of firearms in impacted communities accountable." The new unit, housed within the Civil and Criminal Justice & Public Safety Divisions, will investigate suspected illegal activity across Virginia and bring lawsuits to stop such activity and seek damages and restitution. The Attorney General’s Office is hiring civil litigators, prosecutors and investigators for the new unit. “Creating safer communities starts with holding dealers and manufacturers accountable when they are reckless with the lives of Virginians,” Jones said. “The FAIR Unit will play an integral role in building lasting public safety in our communities.” |

Full disclosure, I work with Mag Zipp, so the magazine side of this is what I've been watching all week. On the Washington County ruling, Judge Jeffrey Campbell blocked enforcement of the assault weapons ban, and he leaned on the 1971 provision of the Virginia Constitution covering the right to keep and bear arms. He also wrote that "the subject firearms herein are not defined as automatic weapons," which is the part I expect gets quoted in every brief from here on. Worth remembering the ban swept in magazines holding more than 15 rounds, and this came four days after the Lancaster County judge's preliminary injunction. Two counties, same conclusion. I'd still hold off on assuming it sticks.
