Get your license or upgrade before the price change if you're on the fence.  Pricing has not gone live(yet).

I can add as many HDDs to my server as a want with TrueNAS scale.

This was merely a (very late) informative post.  I only found out about the price change this morning.

I wasn't here to claim unraid king of shit mountain, but viva el machismo, eh?

Are these licenses transferable to a new machine/build? The FAQ on the linked page doesn't address this.

The way I understand it is that the license is for your specific USB boot device.  You're allowed 1 license per machine, but I don't think it cares if you swap any or all hardware as long as the USB boot drive is intact.  There is a process to change to a different USB if the original breaks.

I actually have 2 more Pro licenses that I use for a lab and test server which both have small ZFS arrays.

I’ve thought about switching over to ZFS for my arrays but I just don’t want to as even with 10Gb networking it’ll take forever.

If I do switch someday it’ll probably be to Ubuntu with 45 Drives Houston Cockpit. I’ve mocked it up and it works but getting notifications for failing/failed drives and other issues set up is the hard part.

Why does each node (drive) list a file system?

With the way UnRAID works you can mix and match file systems on each drive in the array.

The advantages of Unraid and why many choose it over traditional RAID systems:

  • You can mix and match drive sizes at will so it's perfect for adding/replacing drives in the array as budget allows per each single drive. The only limitation is that your parity drive(s) must be the same size or bigger than your largest drive in the array. You can easily replace your parity drive(s) with larger ones and move the old ones to the array to add to raw storage.

  • Any drive can be pulled from the array and the files can be read on a standalone system outside of the array

  • Unraid has a great webui, users do not need to know the command line.

  • Unraid includes UI VM and container platform with a huge library of predefined containers/docker that are very easy to deploy.

Is this pricing per year?

The way the pricing works is you buy the initial license based on how many devices you want to use, then after 1 year if you choose to you can pay $36 for another year of updates.

This is only for the starter and unleashed licenses.  The lifetime license is still perpetual.

Your server will still work and have all the features after the year is up, you just won't receive major OS updates.

For example, if your OS is v6.13.2 even if your year expires you still get all updates within v6.13.x.  You just won't get v6.14.x or higher.

You only pay the extra $36 if you want a year of updates.

It's all detailed here.
