Fish names continue to be back!

To honor the Silent Service, the future Virginia-class attack submarine USS Silversides (SSN 807) will carry the name of a WWII Gato-class submarine.

SSN 804 is USS Bard, which I saw a while ago. I somehow missed that SSN-805 will be USS Tang, and SSN-806 will be USS Wahoo.

Good start.  Can we return to traditional names for carriers as well?

Concur.  Name 'em after battles or old frigates (Enterprise, Wasp, Hornet).  I hate the policy of naming  them after presidents or sect. of navy.

I desperately want the USN to name it's next submarine the U. S. S. Barb. Somebody ought to build a memorial to Gene Flucky; guy was a hardcore American hero.

Revolutionary war battles is the correct naming practice for carriers. Not politicians or secretaries of the navy.

Which name strikes fear into the heart of an enemy? Saratoga? Or Carl Vinson. Just say them out loud. I dare you not to get chills saying Saratoga out loud. When I hear Carl Vinson I just think...

My great uncle was lost on the USS Flier (yes, spelled correctly) in 1944.  Struck a Jap mine while running on the surface near the Philippines.

RIP Oliver Kisamore.

I think the English are also good at giving names to ships as well.

They had carrier names like Courageous, Furious, Illustrious, Invincible, Victorious.

If you're relying on the name to strike fear, then you're doing it wrong.   I doubt any Chinese or Iranians know the difference anyway, it's all just Engrish to them.

Enterprise might be an exception, apparently she was the stuff of legend among the Japanese Navy in WWII. I'm sure that those stories spread.

As a veteran of the USN, I can tell you that the average sailor wouldn’t pass on a Cockchafer. That’s what corpsmen are for.

As I understand it, there has to be, either by tradition or Law, an American vessel named Enterprise.

That being said, What about a carrier named after Fleet Admiral William Halsey
