Georg-Wilhelm Schulz commanded the U-64 for about 8 days before she was fucked up by a British Swordfish. He and what remained of his crew were pulled from the water by Wermacht mountain troops.

He went on to helm the U-124. Sinking 19 vessels for 89,885 GRT. He was awarded the Knights Cross.

U-124 was also referred to as the Edelweisseboot as Schulz had adorned her conning tower with the sigil of the Wermacht mountain troops who had saved him and his crew from the wreckage of U-64.

Interesting. That's an awesome way to say "Thanks. I owe you one."

What were the mountain troops doing on the water?

Lol. My understanding is that their line of advance, the mountain troops, had them adjacent to the shore. I'm trying to hunt down which unit it may have been.
