If you go with a KW or a Pete (new trucks), your engine choices are Cummins or Paccar. Our fleet has a bunch of both. They say the Paccars do a lot better than they did as compared to the same model engine 5 or 6 years ago. The guys with the red engines are happy with them.

Seems when either of them go down, it’s emissions related stuff. Which again, is better than it was, but still not as low maintenance as our Detroit 60s in the gliders.

The glider engines get rebuilt and go 1million plus. The new trucks get traded at 400k-450k miles.

I was talking the other day to the man who runs the show.  He has two of the brand new Pete 589s ordered, both with Paccars and automatic transmissions. There will be plenty of time later for me to drive one. But for now, I’m keeping my old school truck til she can’t be repaired.

I had a ham radio acquaintance over 20 years ago who got a new Volvo truck issued to him and he said it was the greatest thing ever.

I worked at a company who bought new Volvos for their handful of drivers about 10 years ago and they like them.  Of course a lot of their runs for local to the other side of DFW, automatic transmission would come in pretty handy in the middle of a daytime going across I-635 towards the airport.

One of the guys had his a couple months and something with the DEF system malfunctioned and it went into limp home mode. He said it would only do about 5 mph. Luckily he was just a couple miles down the road instead of halfway to Houston where he adjust gone.

They are all the same nowadays.

There have been many "best" , but now..... not so much.

Best efficiency?
Best ergos?
Best amenities?

I drive drove trucks as old as 1978 up to modern stuff.

My favorites all the way around would be a Pete 379 and a KW W900 as a driver. Also the 80s Pete 359 with the Corvette dash was a beautiful truck

My dream truck would be a Kenworth K-100E, modified obviously.

Western Star is just rebranded freightshakers.

At the end of the day, all the semi trucks suck.  None of them are good.  They’re all super expensive, break all the time and eat money.

I don’t know how owner operators do it.

Theres a huge perspective difference between a fleet owner vs a driver. To me, they’re all just a necessary evil.  So I might as well make them pretty.  Paccar also treats me well on the fleet level.  Better than anyone else.

Right now we have

Got all sorts of Kenworths and Peterbilt,  lately I’ve been buying up as many cheap low mile International LT’s with the right engine/Trans Combos, and have a couple bank repot units.  One truck dealer just offered us 7 Internationals with Cummins and Tripacs for a smoking deal because the customer who ordered went bankrupt.

In the end I don’t give a shit about the brand, they’re all going to be a headache.

Owned 2 Freightliners, a 2004 Century and the 2010 Cascadia.

The Century was a POS, if it could fall apart it did. The Detroit 60 didn't like the EGR valve, shitty mileage and lotsa smoke belching.

Cascadia was light years ahead of the Century in terms of QC. Basically nothing fell apart, much easier to fix also. The DD15 had some quirks, the oil O rings for the oil pickup tubes could get hard and brittle, which would lead to a trashed bottom end. Oil suction manifold was made of plastic, leading to a ruined engine if it broke. Radiators were a real weak point, rough roads would tear them up.

EPA mandated shit is what really ruins the trucks.

I said it earlier, the best truck is one with a factory warranty, and you better own three so two can be making money while the one is getting fixed.

Nice. Glad they covered it.

How many tons does that tank hold? Do you typically run them single or double?

LOL, n00b.

Western Star was a stand alone OEM long before FL thought about them.

I am pretty sure that Daimler Chrysler bought them in 2000 or 2001 and they could not design and build that quality back then.

Its gone downhill since, but still a "decent" truck

It’s a set of doubles. I can haul a little over 35 tons with this set and 34 with my other set. We apply it to orchard ground though so no quick unloads.

The FLD was a pretty good truck. Easy to work on and the 60 would get pretty good mileage.

it did its job. It was nothing to brag about and the cab would fall apart long before the chassis and drivetrain.
It was really the first massive assembly line truck that was not a cabover.

Compared to most other trucks, it was a major POS.

I would have picked an old Volvo over the that raggedy FLD.

I remember when the T600 came out. The Anteater. Ugly ass fucking truck, but it did its job as was better built than the FLD.
It was the butterface of trucking

If I had to drive any of my trucks over 1k miles from home my 92 fld is the one I would take. It doesn’t break down.

If buying new, a Western Star, it is just a Cascadia with a fancy hood. That's the 49x models. The 5700xe had all of the crappy Cascadia canbus shit inside but still thee WS body. My 13 glider is built the same as my Kelowna made 2000 4964EX. I've owned nothing but WS for 20 years, but won't be buying another unless it's a mid 2000's lowmax or 4 axle. The best modern truck is one under warranty and have that spare old 60 series powered truck in the yard for when that new truck is in the shop. That is the new o/o way.

Was pushing coolant, they tore the motor down, no issues with head gasket or liners, inspected the cam bearings, the cam was delaminating and damaged the crank, paccar bought me a motor.

I too prefer the KW clutch pedal, but the Pete doesn’t take much time to get accustomed to.

For those who don’t know, the KW clutch pedal goes up under the dash, hinged at the top. The Peterbilt clutch pedal goes down into the floor. Like an old car.

I spent most of my time delivering to really tight places, I preferred freightliners. When the company I worked for switched from 387 petes to cascadias back in the early 2000s it was a night and day difference.  The cascadias were much quieter and they turned so much sharper.

I did get to drive a 2017 pete for a while and damn that truck rode smooth. Can't remember what model it was.

But after all my time OTR, I still like those shitty old freightshakers.

It’s archaic these days.

Every new truck we get now, even the last few 389s, are all autos. I’ve accepted that it’s the future. Still not getting out of my truck yet. Plenty of time for a new truck later.

This C-500 KW tri-drive was part of a matched set that could do around 800k when doing a push pull.
The 7 speed Allisons were easier to match speed/work between trucks than a manual, easier on drive lines too.

I think you are referring to a Glider kit. As far as I know, the federal government is restricting their sales.

It was a custom build by Kenworth. The cab is from a C500 everything underneath is custom. Zoom in you'll see the drive tires are about 5' tall. 7 speed auto, 4 speed aux, driven front axle, planetary hubs. Max speed in 7th with the aux in 4th was 28 mph.

Last I knew that truck is up in Fort McMurrary Alberta, NCSG took it north (along with the tri-drives and another Pete prime mover) when they shut down our terminal.

I can’t even imagine what that cost to build.

For those who don’t know, the KW clutch pedal goes up under the dash, hinged at the top. The Peterbilt clutch pedal goes down into the floor. Like an old car.

QFT.

Love my ‘12 t660. Just added a ‘12 386. It’s my first experience with a Pete and I’m not sure how I feel about the clutch pedal. I know my leg won’t hold it for long periods as well as the KW.

I much prefer the KW mirrors that T660sband some T800s have.  Less framework, a lot easier to see around.

The KW dash is much nicer too

I haven’t drove in about 15 years, the worst pos I did drive was a Sterling, luckily those are dinosaurs now.  My company went from Ford, to Sterling, and now only buys Freightliner.
