Im thinking about getting a single action revolver. I like under 4-5” barrel, case hardened, preferably.357 mag. Years ago I had a 44mag Ruger Vaquero old model I believe, and it was huge. Imo too big and I sold it off. My local gun store has a Cimmaron and also a Taylor’s and Company. Not sure who makes a good gun at a decent price. Not looking for $2000+ colts. Wanted to try and stay $1k or under.

Taylor. I have had one in .45 Colt for over 20 years. It's still going strong. You can load 6 rounds if you want to. It has a safety built into the hammer. Pull the hammer back a tad and it engages. It keeps the firing pin from touching a primer. Releases when you cock the hammer.
I never use it as I'm still old school. 5 rounds. |

Vaquero .357/9mm bundle Can't find a price, It's some kind of exclusive with Lipseys?(Never heard of them) But this would be the route I would go for cheap plinking (maybe when 9mm comes back in stock), in addition to .357. |
|
I liked the Taylor’s and Company I just am not too familiar with the brand.
So whats the verdict on caliber? .357 or is the .45 way to go? I have other guns in .38 thats why I was thinking the .357. |

You can snag a new Cimarron or Taylor's spaghetti import for ~$500. That's what I'd go with, I'm rather impressed with my Taylor's gunfighter.

Taylor's and Cimarron are importers. They primarily import revolvers from Uberti, who manufactures them in Italy. They have higher overall quality standards than the normal Uberti production.

I would go with a convertible Ruger, specifically a convertible Blackhawk, specifically a stainless convertible Blackhawk so I could swap the Super Blackhawk Hunter grip frame on (Sasquatch hands).
Either .357/9mm or .45 depending on what lever action I wanted to pick up (don't forget about that!). |

Ruger Vaquero is what you want. Old model if you can find any. Tough as nails.

Taylor's and Cimarron are just importers, they're all made by Uberti in Italy. So that leaves you with two choices. You can have a relatively faithful copy of a Colt in a wide variety of configurations by buying Uberti. Or you can have an absolute tank of a revolver that's made by Ruger. The new model Vaqueros are smaller than the one you used to own. You may want to check them out.
Actually there's a third option. Pietta is another Italian manufacturer. Lot's of folks in cowboy action shooting like them. I've handled a few and wasn't terribly impressed. But that could just be a Ford vs. Chevy argument. |
|
Cimarron and Uberti make quality guns that don't cost an arm and a leg.
I have a Cimarron Peacemaker/SAA and a Uberti 1895 Remington, both in .45 (long) Colt. |
|
Have you considered buying a DA revolver and cocking the hammer back? Much more practical in the dual role of self defense. Put pear handle grips on it so you can feel like a cowboy.
|
|
I can not easily distinguish the action quality and overall craftsmanship of a Colt versus a Taylor or Cimmaron that's had the Taylor Tune or respective Cimmaron equivalent performed. They're damn fine revolvers.

Freedom Arms is on my list.
I had the privilege of firing one chambered in 475 Linebaugh. Quite possibly the most exciting handgun I’ve ever fired |

View Quote I wished that’s where it stopped. My dad left me some nice old Colts and Winchesters that quite frankly, I love to shoot. They now though have been put away, and I bought these replicas for shooters, and honestly I’ve picked up quite a few Taylor’s that I shoot the hell out of. Plus, while I have some 44-40’s for the traditional reasons, Winchester never did a 45 LC except in a special run, this allows me to have 73’s and 92’s in 45LC as well as 44-40. The bulk of my setups are 45LC. |

I was close to buying these but ended up with a pair of Older Ruger Vaqueros.

Ruger Blackhawk or Super Blackhawk
357, 44 or 45 Then get a matching Marlin levergun |

Cimarron has a great selection, from inexpensive shooter to high end stuff. Ruger New Vaquero if you plan to shoot heavier loads but want to retain an original appearance.
If you really want to get sporty with your ammo then one of the Ruger Blackhawks. I've got a .45ACP/.45 Colt Bisley that's a great gun. Or if you want to really go cheap a Heritage Rough Rider. Not 100% SAA correct (it does have 4 clicks), but mine is a lot of fun to shoot. |

https://ruger.com/products/newModelBlackhawkConvertible/specSheets/5247.html I wish this 5.5" barrel version had been out when I got the 0310 model with the 4 5/8" barrel - I think the 5.5" looks perfect. |

There's also EMF Company that imports Italian guns, similar to Cimarron and Taylor's. I don't own one of them yet but am looking at getting one soon.
OP you need to decide what kind of safety you want (or lack thereof). The original style has a firing pin on the hammer and you can only safely carry it with the hammer down over an empty chamber. There are some Italian guns that have this style of hammer. There are also some that have the more modern transfer bar that can carry 6 rounds with the hammer down safely. There's also a safety on some Uberti guns that you engage by pulling the hammer back just slightly, not a half cock but different. Actually I think last time I read the Uberti manual they have like 4 different safety styles available. I have a Pietta in .45 with the transfer bar so I can load it up with 6 rounds. I mostly shoot it with blackpowder though, so the purists can suck it. For example these Pietta's have the old school style lack of safety: https://www.emf-company.com/store/pc/1873-Great-Western-II-Revolvers-c64.htm These Pietta's have the transfer bar: https://www.emf-company.com/store/pc/1873-Maverick-Revolvers-c522.htm Also I would get .45 but if you are set up to shoot .38 then go with .357 as the current ammo market is ridiculous. You should of course be reloading straight walled cartridges anyway. |

I’ve got a Blackhawk 4-5/8 stainless .357/9mm. Can’t recommend it enough. I did change the grips out with some black walnuts from Chigs.

View Quote Got one. Love it. OP, don’t buy one of those boat anchor Rugers if you want a real SA. You can’t beat the feel and handling of a well balanced Colt clone. Get a Cimarron, they have a gunsmith go through each gun before they sell it. He is a very experienced gentleman who I am proud to call a friend and neighbor. I occasionally carry a 4 3/4” .45 just because I like to. Can’t beat it for making you smile. And for the record, I’ve never shot a Cowboy match...and never will either. Just love the guns. Do it. |
