Just got through this thread... wow.

I’ve got a black cat named lucky too, what a coincidence. She got her name after riding about 45 minutes somewhere up in my grandparents car when they went to meet my mom for something. They were standing in the parking lot talking and all of a sudden she just popped out from underneath the car. Papa named her lucky after that, she’s a crazy cat

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us as you go through this, it really puts things in perspective for me

Sat in the garage this morning and read “The whole thing”.

What I meant in that first post about prayer not making a difference, was that I don’t think if does affect the final outcome,

Still believe that. But it surely makes a difference while getting there.

Still don’t know about after, But as I said, I’m going to find out.

Karla came out and asked what I was doing.

Told her I was reading the whole thing, how amazing it all is.
And she said-

“I know.”

“Maybe somebody will contact you about doing a movie”

Have a great day. Again,

There will be something good in it.

Still praying for you and Karla. I hope this thread is helping you get through but I know it is helping other people, myself included. I imagine that some other people that read your posts, like me, are being just a little nicer to their loved ones and enjoying their time with them just a little more. Just know that you are doing some good that you probably hadn't even intended when you started this. Stay strong and God Bless.

So, on a day  in which I was gonna do "Nothing", I decided to run 3 ads on a local gun board .

Even though the market is depressed, a G19, an Sr22, and a 686 plus no-lock still get some action.

a LOT of action. Way more than some guy who can't wipe without thinking things thru can handle.

In the midst of herding cats, I noticed Karla having a very hard time, so took time out. We were both soon in tears, and at one point, I said- "I hope you take this the way I mean it, but these last 2 weeks have somehow been the best 2 weeks of my life". And they have.

Well, she hit the sack.

Was able to roust her for "Taco Night" (Hey, I'm a VERY good cook), but now she's gone to bed again.

And early tomorrow, I'm going to meet a couple new friends.

And hope her wounds somehow heal a bit during the night.

I'd give it all for that.

ALL of it.

G'night- hope you each found that good thing today.

I've been damn close to not existing anymore a few times. My takeaway is that we're lucky for what we get and aren't owed shit. I don't know if that helps, but it definitely keeps me from getting wrapped up in destructive thoughts. Hopefully it does the same for you.

Good luck to you and never, ever give up.

As to "Maybe God isn't done with you here yet"

That's what my sister said yesterday.

You might have noticed a lack of medical interaction up to now.
I was complaining to my sis about how I was frustrated at cancelled appointments, lack of call-backs- how uncoordinated it all seemed up to
now. And she said "Maybe God is protecting you from something".

Then, last night, without having said anything about that conversation, I had said to Karla-"You know, it's going on 3 weeks- We've had confirmation from 5 different medical people (3 "official", 2 thru friends), and nothing is happening- no call-backs, appointments cancelled, etc. And she says "maybe you'll go another 5 years if they leave you alone".

Maybe, but I can feel things deteriorating, so I don't know what 5 years would be like, but I'm willing.
It's a new week coming up, so we'll see (wish I could). Have appointments the 23rd and 30th w/gp and eye doc anyway.

One thing I've noticed (and found a lot of pleasure in)- Friendships are easier now.
We speak on levels and about things I never thought possible (even Karla and I- and that's after some 47 yrs!). And new friendships have been made.

In recent years, we've talked about losing so many friends- death (mostly), moving away, etc. And it seemed just too hard to find new ones.
Well, it isn't- made 2 friends this week just selling stuff off.

Sat and talked with the guy who bought the bike until after 10 pm, exchanging stories, life experiences, some of where we've been, what we've done. Got a really nice thank-you note the next day.

Another guy bought a Mauser stock and ammo, and insisted on paying twice what I was asking- turns out he's dealing with some issues himself (was headed to the VA after we got done).

Don't know if it's just a matter of letting your guard down, or if God is bring it about, but it all has been wonderful somehow.

One last thing today, Told Karla it was alright, that when you all prayed, it was for both of us. And she said -

"I know"

"I can feel it"

John, the end of that post made things kinda dusty here.   Continued prayers your way for comfort & strength (for both of you), and healing if it's in Gods plan.

I'm can't imagine what you both are going through, but it seems to put things into a different prospective, changes priorities.

Have a restful night, and a Good Morning.. Catch you tomorrow!

So, today was filled to the brim, with a bit of everything, and maybe I'll fill you all in later.
It does look like tomorrow I will be getting some medical action going- nothing specific tomorrow, but should have info on what will happen in the next couple weeks- hey, I've got all the time in the world, eh?

But here's something I've been hit with quite a bit:

Us old guys, especially, hit a time in life when you might ask yourself-

What has my life really been?
I was never a war hero, never saved a life, never took one (lucky me). Heck, I didn't even have kids, didn't bring life into the world.

What difference really, have I ever made?

Didn't make a lot of money, wasn't famous.
A few poor souls got inflicted with my "artwork", some of my craft. My music was never written down, but she loved it.

Loved everyone of my animals.

Helped when I could and as I could.

So the point of all this, is that since diagnosis, I have made a difference- people have told me so.
I've made friends I never would have thought I could.

Anyway, why  are my few friends looking for a way- any way they can possible help me?

Well, because they ARE true friends, and here's their chance to prove it.

Somehow, we just go through life without even thinking about it.

Until a day when you do think about it- every word, every action means so much more than it ever did.

I've never felt more alive than I have these past couple weeks.

And to think, it's always been there- that life has always had meaning.

It really means something.

This somehow, is a blessing.

Thanks all, and G'night

Hello John,

I just found this thread tonight and read through all of it, got side tracked by the puppy link too.

Through all of the reading, I get the sense that you are one hell of a fine man, one I'd like to know and
call "friend".  Your strength and dignity shine through incredibly.

I have a daily prayer list that now has you and Karla added to it.  May God touch and protect and comfort you both.

A thought....  please tell Karla that we are here to talk to if she ever needs a sounding board or shoulder.

Have a good night,
Mike S.

John,

I had a teacher tell me a story that culminated in her nearly being killed in a wreck.

She posted her year of birth on the board, a dash, and four question marks.

She said the numbers don’t matter. She said the only thing that matters is what you do during the dash.

You don’t need to be a super hero to have an impact on a person. Saying the right thing, lending a hand, or being in the right place at the right time can have a bigger impact on someone than you may think.

Have a good night,

Upon reflection,
Things come in the early morning, and I see,
There WERE lives saved. Although I didn’t kill anyone, they might have wished I had when I got done.
And making a difference happened long ago- that’s why those friends try so hard to help.

I’ve been asked if I am a Christian.
I professed faith in Jesus at an early age, 10 or so.
Shortly after that, I was driven from the “church” forever. I was falsely accused of causing some damage.
No one listened to me, but to a man, a man I had thought, wrongly, was a man of God.
I did “penance” for a crime I never committed. So, I could go on about all that, but won’t.

I believe that profession only has to happen once.
“No one comes to the Father but by me”
Somehow, I think that then, Christ has become your “brother”, a term I have heard a lot lately, here and elsewhere. And you can then go to  the Father anytime you want.

A week ago, my sis said she had talked to the pastor who had done my dad’s and Karla’s mom’s funerals.
After I had done dad’s euology, the pastor commented “you would’ve made a pretty good preacher”.
Well, I don’t know about that, but she wanted to know if I wanted to talk to him.
“What for?” I said. “He can help you talk to God”. And I told her- “I can lay at the feet, or sit at the Father’s hand anytime I want- I don’t need anyone to make that happen”.

And I believe we were put here to live a human life. That while here we should enjoy all the earth has to offer.
Why else would we be here?

So, I’ve probably stepped on some “dogma”, believe some things not taught in “church”,
but there it is.

And by the way-

My Brother can beat up your brother.

My Dad can beat up your dad.

Have a great day all,
There will be something good in it.

Well today I broke my vow to clean up my language.
Day started out putting out fires at work, and processing stuff is just plain hard today.

Got a call from the cancer center, and she said Dr XXX had ordered an MRI, and she needed to schedule. I said NO, Dr XXX had requestd copies of the imaging from the MRI I JUST had, and last I had heard, he was ordering a neurological and/or ENT (I had heard "neuro" as "Oral", further complicating things). Not really sure I every got through, but she said she'd check it out and call me back, which she hasn't,
of course.

Then, I called a # she gave, only to find it was the radiology dept, and they couldn't do anything about scheduling a "neuro".

I then called the scheduler at the clinic my GP works out of, and got the # for the "Neuro Sciences Center".
I only got put on hold twice, but at least I was "in our system". She thought it was pretty funny when I ask if that meant I was gonna get a Birthday Card.

You might recall that Dr XXX at the cancer center has "agreed" to see me, but only after he gets results of the neuro. Well, awesome, I got an appointment to see the neurologist- September 13!

Karla's off today, so have the office to myself- somehow feel so very lonely, fighting off a few of those "attacks"-kind of.....

Can't wait to get home- I'd fly if I could.

I've been sharing thread (Karla calls it my "Blog"), every evening.
Last night, she said "please, I can't read it just before dinner anymore".
In response to "Why?", she said: "Because everything ends up tasting salty"

All in all, a fairyly miserable day.

But there WAS "something good" in it-

Discovered people will buy insurance from an old, squinty-eyed guy who talks like a Texan.

So I’m bopping home- left at 4pm, and published hrs are 5pm, but I’d had enough,

And the car rings.

Still amazes me how you can use a whole car to do a phone call.

It was bbb, from the clinic we use, to let me know when Dr hhh (head of said clinic),saw the report, saw how far out I’d been scheduled, said “no way, no how”,hit the phone and raised ,uh, something......

And the upshot is have appointment the day after tomorrow.

Not looking forward to again being told what I already know, but things are moving now......
Funny thing was, a friend and me were talking after lunch (which he’d brought),and I had joked:

“Be kind of nice if the neurologist, after doing what they do, just sat back, and said-

“well, you’re  really fkd up””.

I'm curious...what did you mean by the bolded? I have to admit, I don't quite get it. Maybe I'm just being dense, in a post-dinner stupor, day dreaming of this weekend's Lake Michigan shipwreck diving.

John,

I read that you know Christ, and even though I don't know you, you are my brother. I will be praying for you tonight. I will ask God to ease your suffering and heal you if it is His will.

If things get bad, don't forget that Jesus loves you. Never forget that. He is your Father. Pray and pour out your heart to Him. He is always listening.

Matthew 22:37-40

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

John, I have no idea if these stories will help, but they have been inspirations to me.

A good friend of mine was telling me about his Dad, who had terminal cancer.  Their pastor asked the church to pray for healing one Sunday.  After the prayer, he walked to the front and asked the pastor if he could say something to the congregation.  He thanked them for their prayers, and told them they had been answered.  God had promised to heal him.  He didn't know if it would be this side of Heaven or not, but he was going to be healed.  So don't waste any more prayers on him.  Pray for those who didn't know Jesus and didn't have that promise of healing.

The other is from my Great Aunt.  She was the last of 4 sisters.  She was just over 94 years old when she passed.  She called the family, and told them she was going to die, and come say their goodbyes.  When she was talking with my cousin, she said that Heaven exists outside of time, so everyone who is going to be there is already there so she told him, "I'll see you soon."

A friend from church's Dad had a really rough last year and a half of his life.  He spent probably 90% of it bouncing in and out of the hospital with infections, sicknesses, and on and on.  He used to hold Bible studies in his room for other patients and staff.  The last time he was going in, he looked up at her and asked, "I wonder who I am going in to to witness to this time?"

God bless you and Karla, Brother.  May He grant both of you strength and peace.

Another short night.

Your stories of friends, relatives, and especially parents passing touch me.

When dad lay dying out at the VA, he would softly sing. He had a great voice, had always loved to sing, and staff would stop by to listen.
They loved his songs.

Then came an afternoon when he was more with it somehow.
I spent the afternoon chasing down ice chips, fluffing pillows- he loved some peach nectar I’d found.

At least he didn’t need a shave and haircut- I’d done that earlier (was such a humbling, loving experience, I think I made a post about it on ARF).

At one point, he said “John, prepare”.”Prepare for what?” I said. “Prepare”. And then he said “just go home- Relax”.

We got to tell each other that we loved each other, and finally, simply said goodbye.
I went home and relaxed.

And then he was gone.

The point of all this I guess is:

Prepare. Go home tonight and relax. And let those you love know it. Every day.
As I earlier said, I believe you should enjoy all that living on earth offers.

But think when you spend your precious coins of time.

You only have so many.

Have another wonderful day all.

There will be something good in it.

But there are ather things. I’m drooling more, dribbling more when I take a drink.
Spill more stuff, drop more.
That “prescision” (heck I used to repair watches just for fun) is going.

My walk feels “light”- I list side to side a bit.

Now I’m frightened. What will this take away before it’s done?

Dear God, if it’s shutting things down, please let it shut down something that will end it. End it while
I’m still me, can share, talk, reach out and take her hand.

Pain’s ok, but not that.....

Not as strong as I thought.

In my eyes you are.

Yes. Yes it does.

Thank you.

Just got that door knob fixed. Latch was fubar. Stole one from an interior closet for now.

Dang, who tightened those screws so tight?

Oh.......

I just found this thread and spent an hour reading it.

I've got my own health issues. I don't share a lot with wife/friends/family because I don't like the fuss.

Your posts have made me come to realize that I'm being selfish. My wife and I are going to have a long talk tonight.

Thanks.

@FatMan

You are not going to believe how many people really love you.

Give THEM the gift of them letting you know that.

Give THEM the gift of letting them help.

I can't say it will get any easier, but it is worth everything.

Be Well,
John

John, I'm glad you look for the funny and good things in each day, as that has gotten me through some tough times, and I'm going to rely on it when it's my turn.

Best wishes to you and your wife, I am sure there are miles of smiles to go.

John, I just came upon your thread and spent the last little while praying for you and reading through tears.

Your faith has encouraged me.  I too know what it's like to be hurt by clergy who shouldn't be such.

Keeping your faith after such hurts are a true testimony.  Sometimes our pain is an offering of sorts.  By giving God our hurts to use in His purposes we show true faith and trust.

I am praying for you and Karla.

Thank you Paul.

I think it really was a gift to get that lesson so early.

Never the rest of my life have I put faith in men.

Love, Trust, yes.

And I love your sigline, even if I have found that consequences always come sooner rather than later.

If you have anything that you've always wanted to do that is doable, do it.

Even if it is just something that you wouldn't think important, do it.

My father and I always planned to go fishing as soon as we got some free time. We never did. He is gone now.

Just go out and do it, if you can.

It can be anything. Because it means everything.

I didn't choose the ARF life. ARF life chose me.

So much of everything I've enjoyed is just no longer doable- But I'm not cheated, I got to do it all for a very long time.

Funny you should mention fishing,

Knew a really great guy thru dad.
He loved hunting and fishing.

Just one week after retiring, he was fly fishing the Chama.

Got hit by lightening, and that was it.

And I am hitting the Gun Show this weekend, with a friend I've spent over 30 years going to gun shows- we'd kind of quit past year or so, but thought it would be fun to hit our breakfast spot, and spend the day together

I'm worried about 2 things:

How am I gonna do in a crowd.

I bet I find the deal of a lifetime.

ETA: If I haven't done it by now, I figure I never really wanted to do it.

One last thing today- we need each other tonight, undivided.

And that's OK.

Several have mentioned recordings, videos-

Well, we have that- Vacation and weekend videos- done up in dvds with music, fades, titles and chapters- I got into video editing for a while.

So there's more than enough of that.

But I have come to consider this thread to be a journal of sorts, and would like to leave it.

It's already way too long, and who knows might get a lot longer.

So, anybody know an easy, quick way to preserve all this on paper, pics included?

Thanks for your help!

Have a great night all..

John

Hello again John,
It's Jim in downtown ABQ. It's really good to hear you have good days between some not so great days. Me posting in this type of a thread is very different for me. I have never delved into the personal stuff of someone I do not know or anybody ever on a forum. Maybe because I'm a middle aged guy that has a lot of guns, motorcycles, never had kids, talk like a Texan, and live 20 miles from you is why your sharing has had such an impact on me? Or more likely your sharing is so real and contains zero bullshit it can not be ignored. I am far from a wear my feelings on my sleeve guy but I feel strongly I will never forget the words you are putting down here.

I thank you for sharing what you're going through with such solid dignity and sense of humor in place. I think going to the gun show is an excellent plan! Don't bring cash....

Again, I hope you and Karla are able to find much peace.

Jim

It’s like everybody died at once.

That is the wave after wave of grief I feel tonight.

I’ve got to go back now.

Later.
