Transnet, which runs the railways, ports and pipelines that connect sub-Saharan Africa’s most industrial economy with the outside world, is in deep trouble. Like Eskom, it was badly managed by hacks “deployed” by the ruling party and then pillaged through corrupt contracts, many signed during the era of “state capture” under Jacob Zuma, a former president. During a reorg a few years back I temporarily had a handful of SW guys who were based in Joburg; they all wanted out. I tried to get them to the US or UK with a story crafted around business need. During one of the discussions with HR, one of the SA guys was frank about why they wanted to leave. The HR person was an African American and killed the deal claiming the SA guy was raciss.
This AA HR person had never travelled outside the US and had always lived in middle/upper white neighborhoods. |

lf of the people in the country are out of work and the nation's infrastructure has crumbled Meanwhile, jobs related to goverment work (such as electrical) were given based on tribal connections not ability - so a large part of the work force simply left. The nuclear plants are shut down, the replacement plants - I think 2 of 3 blew up due to construction problems. Who is supposed to maintain them - the people who knew how to do it, or the people with tribal connections... Beautiful country. A lot of good people - but a hopelessly corrupt government thanks to international intervention. The world killed South Africa - because it was considered the moral thing to do. |
