Taurus 6” model 66. I was 14 when i saved up the mowing, hay and tobacco money ($150) to buy it new. Virginia allowed open carry and a minor could carry as long as you were doing farm work, which I pretty much always was.
That summer i ran iinto a state trooper at the local country store. We were both getting a sandwich and drink. He said he liked my revolver, asked what it was and if he could see it. I told him what it was, thanked him for the compliment and said that no, he could not see it because it was loaded. He just smiled and told me to be careful and went on his way.
Things were so much better then.

S&W 686 or Colt Python.

Because .357 Magnum SJHPs vastly outperformed any bullet that would feed through a pistol at that time.

If it absolutely had to be an autoloader for whatever reason then a SIG P220 in .45 ACP.

As I was a M60 gunner in 1985, I'm going with my issued sidearm, a well-worn M1911A1. It rattled like a canasta when shook,
but went "Bang" every time I pulled trigger.
View Quote

Mine went bag every time I pulled the trigger too.
The first time.
But between to crappy old magazines, etc. my “rattler” was not solidly reliable and iffy getting through a magazine or two,
Around ‘88 or so we got the new M9s to replace them.  Plus a two week MTT from the AMU to teach/train us on them.

We bitched hard about the .45 being replaced with 9mm,
But the accuracy and reliability and capacity of the new pistols was hard to argue against.
M16A1s were also replaced with M16A2s.
AN/PVS 4s for our 60s were replaced with Litton red dots.
The CAR-15s were not replaced yet, so the new green tip ammo would often keyhole compared to the 55 grain we still used a lot.
Gustavs were being used and tested as a replacement for our cut down 90 mms.
M24s were showing up to replace our M21s.

Back in the 80's we didn't have as many choices as we have now. Revolvers were still popular then, and the state of the art Glock was just brand new. I don't even remember seeing any Glocks in any TV shows or movies back then.
If I were back in 1985, I'd carry a S&W 645 or 1911 probably. I used to carry a 1911, it was a boat anchor. Times have changed so much.

My grandfather gave it to me. It was in the bottom of a cigar box full of morgan silver dollars.  He said "shussssh" and I shussshed.

Glock wasn't sold commercially in the US until I think the later 80s, although it was created around 82. Glocks were on some episodes of Vice

The Beretta 92 got accepted by the military in maybe 85. I don't remember if they were around in 84

1911s were still being worked on by after market gunsmiths to function reliably.

Were smith and Wesson semi auto da/sa guns around in 84?

Yes, the S&W 2nd Generation Semi-Autos (the 9mm model 439 & 459 and the .45ACP 645 were fairly common and issue pistols of several departments.

FIE 9mm semi auto 9mm pistol I got straight across the counter at a pawn shop in Oak Cliff/Dallas Texas, just right down the street from the Texas Theater near Zang and Jefferson Blvd.

I was involved in collections and skipped and stolen merchandise  primarily in South Dallas and it had its moments.

I periodically went out of state as well tracking stolen merchandise and people down at night due to some of those areas tended to be high crime and dangerous.

People in those areas tended not to fuck with you if you looked, acted, and moved around like they did.

The best cover for success in those kinds of areas was to work your way in after hours and so forth.

I got the weapon free in exchange for not reporting a number of stolen units for sale I found from serial numbers when I used to run places like that periodically.

This was before carrying a gun in Texas was legal but I carried one especially at night on my person anyway.

Strictly a throw away piece and I don't remember what ever happened to it.

I do remember it had a fourteen round magazine and I only had the one that it came with.
