It's going to be the most fantastic helipad in the history of the country.

Personally I'd rather see dollars spend on projects like this than on studying rat fecies in Nairobi, or the sexual practices of the aardvark in Kenya.

*Yes, an F-35B can land on regular concrete, but it is not recommended for routine vertical landings. The aircraft's exhaust creates extreme temperatures exceeding 930°C, causing thermal shock and rapid spalling (cracking) on standard Portland cement runways.

Yeah, the comment was fishy so I looked it up.  It’s been landed vertically on standard concrete highways many times.

There is a possibility of minor spalling or cracking with repeated use.

It won’t blow it apart.

Trump will leave a lasting physical reminder of his time as president. The wing and the helipad are large, permanent structures and will have to be completely destroyed to remove the constant reminder that HE did that.

The general public and even most pilots would be surprised to see the modern pilot equipment in the presidential sea kings and Blackhawks ….. there is none.  Steam gages, actual spinning gyros, and only the most rudimentary stabilization systems.  Radios for ATC are old school mechanical display with physical knobs and there are no digital displays, moving maps, etc.  There is zero rf/ew/emp vulnerability and no software to hack/crash/have bugs/need updates.  The most modern equipment are some fancy secret service compatible radios.

If you were an army or navy pilot in the 80s or 90s and flew Blackhawks or sea kings then that’s what you have.
It’s kept simple, cheap, and reliable for a singular reason - it’s a no fail mission.  You can’t abort if a computer doesn’t boot up properly.  You don’t tell the president to wait while your egi aligns or some silly flight control computer has to go through a 90 second self test.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with old equipment if it does what you need.  It’s usually more reliable, cheaper, and more durable than fancy bleeding edge equipment.

How many layers thick is the standard major highway, though?

Asphalt vs. concrete, too, unless we are including interstates in the conversation.

“No. An F-35B cannot perform a vertical landing on standard "normal" concrete without causing severe damage.During a vertical landing, the swiveling rear exhaust nozzle directs up to 18,000 lbs of thrust downward at extreme temperatures that can exceed 930°C (1,700°F). This intense, rapid heating causes the moisture inside standard Portland cement concrete to expand rapidly, leading to explosive cracking, spalling, and surface destruction. Additionally, if the concrete is asphalt, the engine's heat will melt and destroy it instantly”

I have no idea what surface an F3B can land on.  I’m not sure it even matters in the context of this thread.

I'm not doubting it can land on a regular concrete surface. I just posted what I found. Its says it can be done but not recommended over long term. Take a blow torch to concrete and you will start to see it blow apart in small little chunks. You will hear it will pop as it starts to disintegrate.

The dems conveniently don’t mention the construction is privately funded. And NEVER mention how many people could be fed by the countless millions in political donations they gladly accept.

That said the helipad also needs some sort of rising barrier installed on the public view side to protect from the wacko that may try to take shots at the president.

With the Osprey it's not just the rotor wash, but also the jet exhaust that's pointed down from the nacelles. Rotors are also a little smaller diameter, moving more air in a smaller volume.

My concern with the helipad is that it seems too close to the building for my taste. Should have been more out to the middle of that grassy area.

If they could operate the -22 it would make some short hops vastly faster and more efficient. One would have to be suitably configured, but they could do a short hop to almost any northeastern city direct on the -22 instead of helo to Andrews, airliner to the city, helo or motorcade to destination. A -22 could cut the airliner out of the equation.

That Marine 1 landing sure seemed like a long time in a vulnerable position.  I know we've got some helicopter pilots here who could make a better assessment.

They're landing it on those little pads for the landing gear, and of course trying to make as smooth of a landing as possible.
