I watch all sorts of random shit on YouTube. This one popped up in my feed a watched it because me and some of my friends joke about retiring in The Villages in Florida. It’s kinda long but interesting nonetheless. It goes over the misconceptions associated with the community and what it’s like living there. Seems like a pretty cool place to live your golden years.

They seem to have everything any typical city has. Banks, hospitals, doctors offices etc. I bet they have something like that too.

With SOME KIND OF HEAVEN, first-time feature director Lance Oppenheim cracks the manicured facade of The Villages, America’s largest retirement community – a massive, self-contained utopia located in Central Florida. Behind the gates of this palm tree-lined fantasyland, SOME KIND OF HEAVEN invests in the dreams and desires of a small group of Villages residents – and one interloper – who are unable to find happiness within the community’s pre-packaged paradise. With strikingly composed cinematography, this candy-colored documentary offers a tender and surreal look at the never-ending quest for finding meaning and love in life’s final act.

The Villages has one of the highest STD rates in the nation!  Low male to female ratio and no danger of getting pregnant (so no condom use) leads to a super spreader environment.

Doctor friend south of there calls retirement communities like that his 3V protocol. Vicodin, viagra, and valtrex. Sad but true.

I’ve got a family friend who moved there a few years ago. He said he’s invited to swingers/pill popping parties all the time. He’s a retired FF/paramedic and they invite him because he knows CPR

High STD rates are an urban legend.

No solid data backs it up.

When I think of The Villages, I think it would be like living in a community where everyone pulls a boat up in shalllow water and bathing in each others piss surrounded by people who shouldn't be wearing skimpy clothes.

Or a penicillin dispensary.

So, my mom and stepdad retired there. IIRC they moved around 2005ish and then left around 2007ish. I could be wrong on the exact dates. Point being, they made it ~2 years. They moved there thinking it would be a neat place to retire to. They had seen the marketing propaganda. When they got there, they saw the rest of the story - the swingers and the massive numbers of functional alcoholics and how 'fake' everything was. They got tired of watching golfers walk past their house every day (they lived on a course) and going to the same fake 'town square' gathering places every night. Their favorite place to eat actually wasn't in the Villages proper, it was miles out, looking over a marsh. I can't remember the name of the place but it had great food and locals would drive for miles to eat there.

I visited them once. Must have been late 2006. I'd been planning to visit and mom needed to come back to TN with me for something (I forget what). Maybe she needed to tie up some financial paperwork or drive a car from their old home to the new or....I dunno. But I visited, stayed a few days, and then she rode back with me. She explained that the new was already wearing off and they hated being so far from family.

exactly.  My dad lives in a Dell Webb community north of Austin and its just creepy.  I want to live in a community of mixed ages that always has kids growing up in it.  Everything else is plastic.

I live 15 minutes from the villages, done tons of stuff there. It’s awesome. The streets are clean, the landscaping is beautiful all the time, it’s 99% white (super polite, low crime). Maybe 1 in 20 people have visible tattoos. It’s like going to a downtown area, but not crowded shoulder to shoulder with 90%+ hispanics like everywhere else in Florida. You can go to the square and look in a couple shops, eat at a nice but affordable restaurant, grab some haagen daz ice cream, and sit on the pier by the water as the sun sets. All while there is a band playing live music that is usually classic rock, or country, but at the very least isn’t ghetto puerto-rican shit like I hear the rest of my waking life.

I’ve lived this close for more than 10 years, been there hundreds of times, and have done date nights there several times. I’m 26, my gf is 21, we have a good time there. It feels like going out, but zero ghetto shit. It’s also all free entrance and entertainment.

Villages isnt bad, little far away from everything else though if you want to do more "city stuff".  Orlando is about an hour away so not a super quick drive but totally doable.  Good doctors in the area given everyone is so old.  My mom lives nearby in a smaller community.  like most everywhere it's growing like crazy down there.

I live in Village of Tequesta, it's a wealthy, 99% WASP, beach town. It's pretty similar to this..my wife is 49 and I am 57 now. I retired when CV hit...wife sold her medical practice to the local hospital so we are done. I would have no problem living there except it's all yankes

I've worked LE in The Villages for twenty years, still do.

Lots of BS in this thread already about STD's and swinger parties... but, believe what you want.

Crime... yes, there most certainly is crime here in The Villages. The Villages IS NOT the "gated community" many people believe that it is thus the place is not insulated from crime. Lots of thefts and fraud connected to service industry workers just like any other community. DUI, drugs, domestic Violence, it's all here. Alcoholic and drug-addicted Middle-age kids of the retirees are a big problem... no love like a mother's love. Suicides are also quite common, we just had a Murder/Suicide.

With that said, it does offer a lot to the retired folk who like crowds, social activities, and an active lifestyle. We hope to move when I retire as the place is just too crowded for our liking, we live in Lady Lake.

I went to a cousins funeral down in Florida a couple of years back. My sister and I plus two other cousins from out of the state stayed in a real nice Airbnb in The Villages during the week we were there.  It was an interesting place.  Everyone drives the modded out golf carts and they really like to party in the town square. Good food and restaurants lots of stuff to do also. I wont lie, it was kind of wild with all these old fuckers running around getting crazy on weekday nights with a live bands, dancing and getting loaded. I was really suprised about it. I guess when you are old and retired, why the fuck not.

Neighbor disputes are a common thing... dogs taking a shit in the neighbors yard, neighbor trimming tree branches from his neighbor's tree, you name it.

Not many things funnier than two old dudes in bath robes squared off in the front yard...lol.

We had a guy ask his neighbor out on a date, she said no, he went home got his pistol and did a mag-dump into her front door.

Not uncommon at all. Pain in the ass. They rob their parents blind but parents won't prosecute.

It's like a hidden underground of fucked-up middle-aged kids of the retirees and they all seem to find each other and congregate.

A lot of the retirees I’ve seen have very hot younger wives that don’t seem to mind the retired life at all.

I’ve also met several with wives in the 50s and 60s and those women are hot also.

Pointed this out to my wife and she said that it’s easier to stay healthy and look good when have Villages kind of money.

I did see an article about The Villages years ago where a doctor who worked there said that the number one health issue seen is venereal disease.
Maybe urban legend, just telling you what I read.

An old guy quoted in the article said that between E.D. meds and the fact that retirement age females outnumber males, it’s a sexual paradise for the guys.

Happened to be at North Myrtle Beach during Shag Week last year.
(The Shag is a popular dance there.)
I was amazed at the number of very attractive women in their 50s and 60s.
