What are some good books to read on the Rhodesian war?
I was told the book by Dennis Croukamp is good. Anyone? |
|
Three sips of gin- Tim Bax (SAS- he even met Mikhail Kalashnikov later)
To the edge - Paul French (SAS) The Bleed- John Crohn (US Army / Rhodesia) Mukiwa- Peter Godwin (General background- all his books are worth reading, especially about the Zimbabwe politics, ethnic cleansing of the Ndelbe by Mugabe and general horrible Mugabe govt.) Never Quite a Soldier- David Lemon ( BSAP) Kroucamp’s book was good also- believe he may have been the guy left behind who did a single person exfil thru hostile areas. Crazy stories. Godwin was doing books on the opposition party in Zimbabwe and how bad the Mugabe supporters were, but he hasn’t put out anything in a few years. Not sure he will since his family is fully out now. He has good info on the Gurkahundi genocide though that you won’t find in most books (where Mugabe’s Shona govt killed Ndelbe tribal members by the tens of thousands) Good reading subject, as it show a typical communist government’s behavior. Since 1980, until last year, one person was in charge, and it was a total mess. Should be a required reading subject for anyone who supports socialism or communism... |

The Croukamp book is awesome. Great read, I try to revisit it every few years.
James and the duck is good too. |

If you can find Fireforce, by Chris Cocks, that's a good one. It looks like you can get it on Kindle.

^ I'd be real careful of Vice News.
Robert MacKenzie never made it past PFC in the US Army. He was WIA in Nam and medically discharged before he went to Rhodesia. He also served w/ SADF after Rhodesia fell, in the Recces. There were around 300 Yanks in the actual Rhodesian Forces. A lot more went over to do "Farm Protection" but as much as SOF Magazine sang their praises that was not the same thing. Of the Rhodesian ranks, there were 7 US KIAs, 3 of those being C SQDN SAS. 5 Americans served in The Selous Scouts. I believe 7 total served in C SQDN SAS. Good luck finding one of Croukamp's books for under $100. "Only My Friends Call Me Crouks" goes for upward toward $400. I had a signed copy that I got from him personally when I was in 44 Para Assoc in RSA but I gave it to my headhunter in a moment of weakness. He's scored me some pretty good contracting gigs so its all good but regardless- when I saw what that book was actually worth I nearly passed out. Luckily I scored another copy off eBay for 40 bucks from someone clearly didn't know what they had. If you're looking for other good Bush War material run down "The Terrible Ones" and "The Philistines." "Terrible Ones" is about 32 BN, SADF and "Philistines" is about 44 Pathfinder. 44 Pathfinder was a largely foreign manned SOF unit of Rhodies, Brits, Americans, Aussies, etc. I know 2 guys who served in it. Both units, 32 BN and 44 Path were disbanded under controversial circumstances due to their methods. "The Flechas" is another good read. They were a Portuguese SOF unit who among other things were responsible for standing up most of S.Africa's SOF programs. The Portuguese Bush War contributions are VASTLY overlooked by most people studying that era. They were just as formidable as the Rhodies. |

Some good recommendations so far but a great read to see the civvy side of living in Rhodesia during that time is Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight: An African Childhood by Alexandra Fuller

Farmers had to convoy to town with neighbors with their machine guns out of the car windows to go grocery shopping. The author's mom used her uzi to kill a cobra that had gotten into the pantry. But they also were still going about their daily lives. They lived on the border of Mozambique, if I recall, and had issues with incursions onto their land. Also kind of a perspective of how daily life would look during certain versions of a boogaloo. Good read. |

“A Handful of Hard Men, the SAS and the Battle for Rhodesia” is a great book.

They're out there. You're just going to pay a ridiculous premium. Like $150-$300. They're more common from overseas outlets, like AUS and RSA.

Got into building FALs at the beginning of parts kit imports, and I can attest that you could hardly even give away Rhodesian and South African field painted parts and magazines. A lot of guys stripped the "baby poo" paint off.
Now it's like gold. Gun guys are a fickle bunch. |

Fun fact: I used to work with IG user RhodesianArms until (fuck the) NYT gutted his business model, implied he was a racist, and then doxed his personal info. The dude just ghosted.

The Canadian press tried to do the same thing to Fireforce Ventures but those guys hung on and beat them at their own game. Little did they know the main guy at Fireforce isn't even white.

One mags had traces of baby poop paint at the bottom of the grooves. It was a worn and homely magazine. I had no problem trading it, in fact I wasn’t looking to but was talked into it despite me saying there was hardly any paint. I don’t remember if we tradeded mag for mag or what but I wasn’t hurt at all. |
