Update 9/5 A BIG THANK YOU! to @Cargo   Friday morning, we were surprised with a package. Students always enjoy opening them. They thought I was lying to them when I said I had no idea what it was.    They were already coming up with ideas on how to use it in the display. Should be fun to incorporate.  I was down before classes getting a picture of the tower progress, when this young lady photobombed my shot. She is a former student from a long time ago, and has been working for the district as an advocate for homeless students. It's fun to see former students come back and work for the district, even if it does make one feel a bit old.   |

Update 9/6 Another surprise yesterday afternoon!  @DK-Prof generously sent us 2 copies of The Long Ships by, Frans G. Bengtsson. THANK YOU, SIR!  I had one student already request to take a copy home to read. You will recognize her as working on the last two big projects.  The dragon head is making progress. Students are a little skittish about diving into making big changes. They are getting better and understanding the reduction sculpting process.   We had to take the top two levels of our tower off to reface the edges, as they just ended up too different from each other. This has set us back a bit, and getting them back on there, square to the rest of the tower has shown to be challenging.  Yesterday was a bit frustrating and mentally challenging for our longship crew. We have to figure out how to get the ribs the correct size and shape, not having more than a couple example drawings to work from. We think we have a process now for reducing them, and still retaining the correct shape and height from the keel. We also think we worked out where the changes in shape need to take place along the keel. We may be wrong and have to do these again. Hopefully not. One of my lead students was a little exhausted by the end of the day working on this problem. She usually spends a couple extra hours a day on her own time, down working on the ship. |

Damn, that's surprising. It definitely can be if you aren’t directly involved in care or education of people in that age group, but it isn’t at all uncommon. I see things from the medical side as well as through my involvement in foster care, and I also have several friends who are educators, so I get some insight that way. Lots of them have already had encounters with the foster care/child welfare system and aren’t interested in returning to that hell, so they leave home and find other ways to survive. |

Update 9/7 The Viking zombies are going well. Students were experimenting with bondo yesterday to fill the ribs with muscle. I bought some fabric a couple days ago for them to use to start dressing them appropriately.  Our Dragon rider showed up yesterday.  Our Dragon head continues to get more refined.  The bottom of the Viking village will have caves under the sea.  The tower now has all it's sides on it, and students are working to draw out where the windows and arrow slits will go.  This young lady, you will will recognize from last year's project, does not have an art class this year, as she has too many college classes. She wants to graduate #1 in her class this year. She signed up for our remediation hour so she could work on the project.   Our ship............. We are continuing to work on getting a cut out of what we would like to see on the sides of the bow keel.  Students built a stand to get the ship upright, so it was easier to work on.   This is where we are probably going to have to do some rework. My team leader here, is working to get the base of the ribs on the keel. The problem is, I think our pattern for the base rib is too aggressive, and not flat enough. This does not really show till today.    As cool as it looks, I think they are too high on the keel, and to aggressive upwards.   I think we will have to rework all of them. I was hoping we might just create new "middle" ribs and move these to the outer ends, but I think they are just too high and need to attach further down on the keel.  |

Update 9/8 Frantic Friday! More dragon work progress. We talked about how we would try to make the eyes yesterday. We think we might try epoxy resin. Could be pretty fun.     Cutting new ribs for our ship.  Moving the ribs lower on the keel. We need to adjust where they attach.  Tunnels being shaped and cut  The beginning of the Castle tier.  |

How big are the dragon eyes compared to an egg(maybe a goose egg)? If you blow the contents out of an egg, then enlarge the hole in one end to allow refilling, you've got a cheap, single use resin mold, and an egg would be somewhat close to an eye shape. Fill the egg with resin, dye and let dry. I'm sure they don't make taxidermy eyes big enough. |

Drop it in the middle of the DIY Mold soft silicone stuff, excellent for copies when working with polyester/epoxy resins.

Then fill halfway or maybe 2/3 of the way with resin and then put down your vertical black slit eye and could get all 3D artsy and pull resin dye colors out from the black in a new wet layer to give depth to the iris in a couple shades of brown leading coming out of the black like rays. Or, just draw a super realistic eye like drawing and transfer it to the resin somehow (depending on media used to create it). Not quite sure if paper in the middle would hold shape with new layer of resin for rear of eye ball/mounting and gluing surface which could, should, sold have a black background I guess around the rear of the eye shell, or red if you wanted to be able to see the firey pits of hell if you look into the eye. Sky is the limit and doing several thin resin layers with colors coming out could really give true depth and be realistic if the lack clipped oval vertical slit was put in first to block the points where you pull colors out into the resin. Of course, I mention all the time - Vacuum pump to save you bubbles headaches.

@guns762 I made this Viking boat from a kit about 45 years ago. The dragon head and tail are metal as the oars, shields and benches. I had to carve the boat hull myself. That works just with a plain piece of plexiglas then masking it and sandblasting off the surface where you want the light feed from the edges to light up the glass. could just cut the plexiglass to fit but the edges would need torch melt polishing so the light from the LEDs would bounce properly instead of just seeing a beam from where the LEDs emit to the first curve in the cut. It gets really finicky when you're trying to use Plexiglas as a planar fiber optic to get all the internal light reflections correct so mostly just the frosted areas light up. I was thinking fake smoke and fire like the smoke jumpers project. Having fire in the school would probably be as bad as having it on a plane. |

Not quite sure if paper in the middle would hold shape with new layer of resin for rear of eye ball/mounting and gluing surface which could, should, sold have a black background I guess around the rear of the eye shell, or red if you wanted to be able to see the firey pits of hell if you look into the eye. Sky is the limit and doing several thin resin layers with colors coming out could really give true depth and be realistic if the lack clipped oval vertical slit was put in first to block the points where you pull colors out into the resin. Update 9/11 Our hull rework is going pretty well. We have a system that seems to be getting the shape we need, adjusting the angle slightly for each set of ribs.    So happy.   Checking ARFCOM to make sure the pictures of herself are acceptable.  Our Viking Woodshop teacher taking measurements for the dragon head that his class is going to work on.  What he has come up with for a dragon head.  Burlap going on over the village landscape tier. We are using Sherwin & Williams Pro-880 paste and it works really well giving us a hard shell once dry.  |
