The Nuerburgring is the best place in the world and is only about an hour south of Koeln.
If you enjoy motorsports it's truly a mecca that you cannot miss. |

Quoted: Good. Keep ‘em coming. Not really into the insta thots but may grab a few pics for team. View Quote Lived in Koln for a year. Oddly, the best burger I've ever had came from Die Fette Kuh. Don't be too shocked when you see germans eating burgers with a fork and knife. https://www.diefettekuh.de/ Neumarkt is pretty fun. If you go hiking west of the city you can see craters from WWII bombs. Kolsch sucks, stick to Weizen. If you MUST have Kolsch, Peters is passable as an ok beer. Avoid Maisels. Don't get caught carrying a knife, aka weapon of mass destruction. Had some fun nights here! https://www.instagram.com/club_subway/?hl=en |

We lived for three years in a (very) small village called Isenbruch just on the German side of the border outside Sittard and Selfkant. Very rural, so we drove into Dusseldorf and Cologne often for a taste of big city life.
As mentioned, the Cologne Cathedral is amazing, and I wouldn't miss it in that part of the world. After we already done a lot of the smaller historic venues we started spending more time in Dusseldorf...it is (or was) the richest city in Germany at one point, and it shows. The Konigsallee runs up and down a small contained waterway, and if you didn't know better you'd think you were on Rodeo Drive. Very upscale shopping for the kind of stuff you just don't see much outside London, Paris and New York. What I liked better was the almost constant stream of supercars. Tons of higher end Mercs and Porsches, but plenty of genuine exotics, too. The Japanese Gardens are well worth the entry as well, if you have an interest in horticulture or Japanese design. We got really fond of a steak joint in Dussledorf near the river called the Block House. Not uber fancy, but they do a fantastic lunch petit filet mignon for a reasonable price. We tried several picked off one of those "ten best" lists, and it kind of became our regular. |

Munich is my favorite city in the world. Grew up about 50 miles south of there.
I would not go to Germany without spending a lot of time in Munich. And Bavaria in general. |

If you can get to Nürburg, just south of Cologne, you can check out the Nürburgring racetrack.

now is white asparagus season in Germany, eat this delicacy with smoked ham and new potatoes and Hollandaise sauce

View Quote I recently read a book about that, I’d really like to visit that site. |

I presently live in Düsseldorf. I agree that Bavaria would probably be a nicer area to visit but, as you‘re headed here, it is what it is
Feel free to message me when you‘re here. I don‘t go out much any more in DUS as the demographic that‘s most prevalent these days isn‘t who I want to hang out with, therefore I‘m probably not a good tour guide BUT - I speak german and might get you out of jail. If you get too bored we could go shooting as well |

If you can’t tell, people in Dusseldorf think the Kolsch in Cologne is piss water and the the people in cologne think the beer in Dusseldorf is dirty river water.
I haven’t been in 10 years but used to go to cologne for work quite a bit. We have a facility in Hürth. I wish I was single while I was there. There is a place we used to walk to not far from the Dome that had amazing Arabic food served family style. I wouldn’t walk in that area now though. |

I was at Bitburg about seventy miles away, many years ago. Cologne was the closest McDonalds, although we did stop at the cathedral once. There was nothing like getting a bratwurst after drinking. The red stuff wasn't ketchup, more like mayonaise. Half the Herms (Herman the German) didn't like americans. I bet they miss the dollars since the airbase was deactivated.
There is quite a bit of Roman stuff at Trier to the west if you get a chance. The Porta Nigra (Black Gate) is one of the best preserved roman sites. Also imperial baths and a cathedral there. Karl Marx house is there also I believe. |

Koln is fairly close to Aachen- a fascinating older cathedral with rich history. You can also make day trips by train to Strasbourg and Colmar in the Alsace region of France. Very scenic. Burg Eltz, Rotenburg, and Ulm are within a day trip range as well.
I concur with all the Bavaria recommendations but Bavaria is kind of kitty-corner opposite side of Germany from Koln. DB trains are great, will take you where you need to go, and are cheap-ish and safe. Avoid Frankfurt. In 3 years in Europe the only places I felt “less” safe were Frankfurt and Naples. Arfcom will tell you a tale of how unsafe Europe is cause of “all the migrants” but the reality is I feel safer in almost every European city than in major US cities. |

Had a co worker just come back from a vacation there. There was strikes going on that got her stuck there for a few extra days and was late back to work. Apparently they can only strike for a few days and then have to be back at work for a couple then strike again. Check the strike days to see if it will affect your inbound and return dates

Quoted: Go to the cathedral in Cologne. Pretty damn amazing. If I recall correctly the previous bishops are still entombed all around the cathedral View Quote It’s pretty cool to see. IIRC the reason it wasn’t bombed was because it was used as a reference point for the Allies to bing the shit out of the rest of the city. Almost every building in the city is post WWII. |

Just got an email on an item I ordered from Bremen with my address as Vereinigte Staaten. I had to look it up lol.

If you're not in Bavaria where the scenery is worth the trip itself enjoy the food, bier, and bier halls. The women are nice to look at, too.

OST, may be going for work soon too.
I would be in Thuringia. Probably for the better part of a month. Married and sober, so I suppose I will miss out on those parts of the culture y'all are discussing... So far, my list is: I want to drive some Autobahn, I'm pretty sure my rental will be a Golf if I'm lucky or a Seat or Ford if I'm not, so I won't be really hauling ass. Also want to go visit the Wasserkuppe, it is a couple hours or so from where I would be. Go see the museum, maybe fly a little if I take a RC plane with me. Probably do some ham radio stuff, one of my transceivers was designed by a German ham. Other than that, and working, I am still trying to figure out what to do... |

Germany usually comes out strong in the beginning but they are NOT a second half team. I'll tell you that much.

We’re staying near the Cathedral Cologne so that was a great stop. ETA: The trains are terrible. Haven’t yet had a train on time. All 15-45 mins behind. I thought the German transit would be more on the ball. Don’t get me wrong, the shoeless and shirtless migrants yelling to themselves are entertaining but screw mass transit. |
