We have a 38 y/o completely disabled son who is our dependent.  He has always received SSI disability.  In 2020 He received Social Security under his SSN for $17k.  Do I have to report that on my return?  Do I have to file a $0 balance return for him as that was his only income and he is unable to work or leave the house.  If we have to file a $0 balance return I still file him with me and my wife as a dependent, correct?

Your son should file the return, and he will report that he is a dependent claimed by someone else.

If his only income was SS then he shouldn't have a filing requirement.  Still not a bad idea to file.  DO NOT report the income on your return.
