Hill is the real deal. Hats off to Jay Hill and the Michigan secondary... seeing how competent and how well aligned the Michigan secondary was this past weekend shows why many of us noted a desire for a more secondary-oriented defensive coordinator than Wink was. The modern game is built around the passing attack in greater consistency than the run game, and so ensuring you are sound on the back end is crucial to winning games. That, paired with an elite pass rush, are exactly what Michigan did on Saturday to make Oklahoma's offense look like Michigan's the week prior. Jay Hill called an excellent game, and this secondary played incredibly well, outside of pretty much the one busted drive there in the third quarter. Defense will 100 percent carry the team this season. Offense will continue to be a major work in progress. So far not a fan of Beck. Against UTEP this week need to get the run game clicking as well as cleaning up the penalties. Essentially, the season boils down to just about five remaining games: vs. #18 Iowa Hawkeyes (Sept. 26th) vs. #14 Penn State Nittany Lions (Oct. 17) vs. #4 Indiana Hoosiers (Oct. 24) at #21 Oregon Ducks (Nov. 14) at #6 Ohio State Buckeyes (Nov. 28) Win at least three of those and this is a playoff team with zero if's and's or but's about it. Win 2 of the 5 and it then leaves Michigan with a shot at the playoffs, but with it largely out of their hands as it'd be up to (a) the rest of the CFP hopeful field to not win as much, and (b) the teams that Michigan beat to do their part and win some additional games and boost their standing as a quality win for Michigan. I'd also note timing is huge too, as three loses in the last three big games is going to leave a worse taste on the CFP Committee's mouth than should they drop one to Iowa or Penn State but then beat Oregon on the road in mid-November, for example. Now again, Oregon certainly looked a lot more vulnerable than they did seventy-two hours ago, though an away game at Autzen is nothing to scoff at. Right now, I'd tentatively move Michigan back to 9-3. In short, we are certainly back from a standpoint that it looks like this team will be competitive and able to go toe-to-toe with some significant programs, but again, still need to see the offense actually develop a bit more before the Playoffs are truly realistic. |
