I liked the description of attacking the entrenched enemy from behind as they looked forward without even realizing the line had been broken farther down and our troops currently pouring through their line. I was aware of the French pamphlet, but not of the Russians. Thanks.
Trench raids dates back to at least the days of Vauban. It really became a high art during the Civil War. The most spectacular raid netted up over 200 Union soldiers, most of whom were from the famous 69th New York Volunteer Infantry. That unit still exists today. |

A lota good that did them. That bullet doesn't care about advanced tactics or how aggressive you are...
Against force multipliers (machine guns/artillery), fodder is fodder and in the end, there's no one left. Two tries for the Germans to learn that lesson. |

I caretake 3 Gewehr 98's that are unit marked to 'Pioneer' units. In our parlance, they would be considered combat engineers, and in the German military, they were among the 1st troops to be chosen and trained in sturmtruppen tactics. Some of the coolest historic rifles I've ever handled.
An awesome book is 'Storm of Steel' by Ernst Junger. He was sturmtruppen and was wounded 11 times in combat. Lived to be 102? years old. |
